Hi Howard! I thought it was lovely...I was kinda rooting for the girl who took 2nd place. Yes, I know what you mean about the language barrier, however when they describe what she is signing or chanting about before she performs it really helped me to understand better. I really love the ancient or kahiko style. I love the chants! I will watch again tonight as well. OH YEAH! What a pain! About every 20 minutes (usually right in the middle of a performance) my computer timed out...but still worth it to get a real nice peek!

Aloha Carrie & Punatics,
Well, having sat through two nights of hula today I gave my Merrie Monarch ticket to my neighbor and am staying home to watch it on TV tonight. Being able to compare the two, I think you get a much better view on TV. And the seat is MUCH more comfortable, not to mention no line for the lua. Being there is way cool and special, but after two nights of it, it requires a level of endurance I don't seem to have anymore. We would leave for Hilo at 3:00 to get in line to get good seats and finally make it back home around 1:30. I stayed home and took a nap while my mainland and Oahu friends went to town to wait in line to get good seats. Now I'll be able to stay awake to see the awards.
The commentary on the TV adds a lot to the presentation. What we hear on the program isn't broadcast at the competition. So, even though we aren't there, we've still got some pretty good seats and a great view.
