Does anyone else agree that the light on volvano highway and kulani street is too long green and too short yellow? I timed the yellow light it is 3 seconds. It stays green until the nose of my 15' long vehicle is into the intersection. If the green light were shorter it would change upon approach instead of allready in intersection and if yellow were longer a vehicle could clear before it turns red. Oversight or speedtrap?

I've never seen a cop lurking around there, so probably not a speed trap.
In fact, I've never seen anybody pulled over for running a red light here on the island, so you probably don't have to worry.

I see people run red lights in hilo all the time.. almost as much as people run green lights.

I drive that intersection a few times a day... no probs I notice. which direction are you going on Kulani 35 mph or Hwy 11 45mph, and are you turning? there is 4 turn lanes w/ 4 lights as well, so.... its a signal that works great IMO, and is very much in need especially with all the kids going to school at same time in morning out of Fern Acres and upper Hawaiian Acres w/all having to use SKalani every school day...
fwiw, we only have about 11 traffic signals in 500 square miles of Puna... Honolulu has over 800 alone and its a city, not a district...

too long green and too short yellow?
I find that this signal favors Kulani too much, causing late afternoon traffic to back up to the Coffee Mill -- assume this is some kind of "growth management" strategy being inflicted upon us by State, or perhaps just simple incompetence, easily missed because they don't care (eg, it's not on "the main island" where the State lives).

The cops say any problem with lights are the responsibility of the safety check people.
