Billy Kenoi - Good Bye and Good Riddence

Mayor Kenoi's administration was able to construct/or rehabilitate several roads in West Hawaii. He was able to do more in eight years than Harry Kim did.

Mayor Kenoi-

Mamalahoa Highway bypass
La'aloa Avenue Extension
Rehabilitation of Kaiminani Drive Phase 1 & 2
Ane K. Highway
Widening of Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea

And he did it in the midst of...and coming out of recession. Not to mention all the additions and renovations for our parks and recreational facilities. Look, I'm no Billy fan. I voted against him twice. But I will not act like he did not do anything for our county. The new park in Puna -- albeit new...and still in need of finishing touches -- will be transformational for Puna folks. It is real easy for folks to talk negatively about it if you don't use it. But for those of us who have already seen the facility packed with kids and other community folks --it's a slam dunk. To see people walking, playing, saying hello to one another is a good thing for Puna. Again, I'm not a Billy fan, but I will not deny his accomplishments.

Mayor Kim-

Widening of Kuakini Highway
Manawalea Street/Keanalehu Street Extension (completed in Mayor Kenoi's first term )
Kealaka'a Street realignment/signalization (completed in Mayor Kenoi's first term)

No. Riddence is spelled riddence. Riddance is spelled riddance. You're welcome.

My 2 cents - Billy was being a good mayor in planning the various parks and other improvements. Some of them are truly useful and welcome additions to our island. In this, he was doing his job, which is commendable but hardly heroic as some see it.

Rushing the construction with overtime and overuns on the taxpayer dime so they get completed on his watch, so he can take the glory and the credit, is the result of a hyper-inflated ego that cannot see the difference between public good and personal aggrandizement. The same deep flaw that allows him to justify titty bars on the public dime.

No big fan of Kenoi, however, he is human...Others in his position (and higher elected offices on the State and Federal level) have done the same, if not worse.

He was targeted by the Democratic party, and Dan Inouye was not here to handle "damage control".

Kenoi has done some good things for this County, and done some terrible things. After all, he is from Kalapana, and was Harry Kim's protege (of sorts). My how times have changed.

I wish Kenoi well in his future endeavors. "There is always some good in those who are bad, and some bad in all those who are good"...one of my Papa's most poignant, memorable, life lessons to all of us.

Not a big fan of the OP's initial screed, his bias is well developed on this forum so I thought I'd leave the subject alone in its echo chamber. However, with all due respect, I'd like to paraphrase Opihikaos post to;

"…(Kenoi) has done some great things for this County and has made some poor choices as well…"

I saw Billy recently and he confided how relieved he was to step out of the office and resume private life. He related the burden he had carried everyday, something we on the outside would rarely, if ever, consider of him. Public service is hard if you take it seriously. We look at the caricatures in the HTH of a feckless charlatan and the YouTube videos of some drunk and wonder why we were ever fooled into electing him in 4 consecutive elections (Primary + General's). However these cartoonish representations are what's foolish to rely on.
The reality is that our County was well served by Billy, his competent appointees and his prudent budgetary policies such that we have had massive public works projects to the communities benefit and flat debt service to pay for it. Could Public Works have improved the Permitting process filurther? Yes! Why didn't They? 'cause y'all can't fire everybody and personnel trumps. Policy in government, everytime.

Finally, the brouhaha over the P-Card was shown for what it was by the resounding silence of the HTH/WHT after the juries unanimous verdicts. Thousands of inches of redundant blather, conjecture, and innuendo for months and not a single "whoops, my bad" after the Jury disagreed with the Publisher/Editor.
The consequence of that reporters bonfire of vanities is we got Harry's recoronation....between him and Trump may God have mercy on our souls!

Prediction.
Trump will be much better than Harry 1 was or Harry 2 ever will be.

Thread Alert: a national political reference used only for context and comparison to local issues

Leilanidude

I doubt it, and the difference in degrees is massive. Harry screws up as an arrogant light weight in County office and we pay through missed services and/or higher taxes.
Donald screws up as an anti-intellectual, arrogant authoritarian with a narcissistic personality and we have missed services, higher taxes, diminished international standing, increased deterioration of the public's faith in government as well as War, Climate Change, repressive social policies, misogyny, racism and isolationism expressed in our highest office.

While both are troubling only one is potentially toxic.

Heh Heh, mahalo HiloPuna, how did I miss this thread ? But me thinks you need to do some deeper research on the subject you are railing against under a cloaked guise here.

Thanks for both of those BillyB ( one of my favs from them ) and Guardship.

I had thought that only Paul/Tom broke out the spelling card when nothing else to say or challenged with facts. It seems we have another whoM, gets offended by spelling more rather thEn content.

peace and happy new year !
