FDA Approved GMO Pink Pineapple
#1
Del Monte has developed a pink pineapple with fruit the color of watermelon flesh. It's GMO, and FDA approved. For now it will only be grown in Costa Rica. But if it's sold in the US (Hawaii?) the crowns can be planted and grown, right? Discuss, rant, or activate panic attack.

A strain of pineapple genetically engineered to be pink instead of yellow got the go-ahead from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday.

"(Del Monte) submitted information to the agency to demonstrate that the pink flesh pineapple is as safe and nutritious as its conventional counterparts," the FDA said.

"(Del Monte's) new pineapple has been genetically engineered to produce lower levels of the enzymes already in conventional pineapple that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene. Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink."

The pineapple will be grown in Costa Rica. The company will label it "extra sweet pink flesh pineapple."

Note to Makuu Market vendors: if I see you selling this I WILL buy it from you.
But I can't figure why they did this. A pink pineapple would look a bit strange. Just the novelty factor?

Ooooohhh . . . I'll eat it and grow it, too. Maybe it will glow in the dark for added impact. That would really be nice. I might have to start a farm just so I can thumb my nose at the local Luddites.

It's probably patented like other GMO products. You can't freely grow it from a crown without actually buying it from the company.

It is patented I believe..

Right. I'll just add it to the List Of Daily Felonies.

This should tick off Dole. Now they have to come up with something new. Maybe cross a pineapple with a papaya. A Pineapaya.

"Hello, Dog the Bounty Hunter? Del Monte here. We've got a case we'd like you to look into. Where? Puna District. What do you mean you no longer investigate in deepest, darkest... It's Hawaii isn't it? Not as far as you're concerned?"
