Would it not be a better idea to take it to the Humane Society so it can be reunited with its owner and/or adopted out and/or dealt with humanely?

Yeah, I know. But that's what I did. Now he's dead. Judging by the scarring around his neck, he was a tie-dog. So, lose-lose. If I had just let him be, he would have been better off.

Puna strikes me as a pretty good place to be a stray dog. Nice weather. Plenty of rainfall/water. Plenty of fruit trees dropping yummies on the ground. Lots of trash to rummage thru. Wild chickens to hunt. Beats winding up in the county landfill, no?

Would it be better to be a stray or a tie-dog? Hard to say.

Of course, if the stray in question has a collar, or is injured, or is totally pathetic, I'll coax him in and take him to the vet and try to find the owner...and then we'll have FOUR dogs.[Wink]

Having stray dogs roaming around isn't good for anyone or any thing. I think most end up getting hit by cars.

I lived in American Samoa for a time some years ago. There were plenty of stray dogs on the island. They formed packs that roamed around at night scavenging through garbage cans in an attempt to find something to eat. In the morning, paper, plastic, and cans could be found scattered around the refuse containers throughout the neighborhoods.
