Maybe it's all for the best. I don't recall the theater being used more than a dozen times in the last 2-3 years. The parking lot is a disaster, the farmers market has been having growing pains, the back of the pawn shop has been rotting away, etc. Let's hope some local funding appears and downtown Pahoa can stay 'funky' or else PBC is right - Kea'au South. Fingers crossed!

I am sure that is real consolation for the 30-50 people who no longer have livelihoods and/or homes in a place with limited jobs and SRO housing. Talk about heartless.

edited to add: there is a church that used the building at least once a week, if not more, so it was used far more "than a dozen times in the last 2-3 years", including being booked for an open mic on the second Saturday's Art Walk by a new promoter who had big plans for local music there.

Sad day. I rarely go to Pahoa, but the historic architecture has always been something to admire. I suppose it's too soon to know for sure at this point, but I wonder exactly how and where the fire started.

Change is constant SR, nothing stays the same forever. Try to see the bright side of things for once. As my last post began, "maybe it's all for the best".

That block of Old Pahoa Town is the historic heart of the village.
Let's hope as Rob said that the owners have adequate insurance. If it's possible to rebuild in a similar architectural style, the situation may not be as bleak and somber as it appears this morning.

What I meant by "push" for the original style architecture is actually "stand up and demand" it per the PCDP, as a cheap, metal siding Ag building replica (read Pahoa Auto, Malama, no offense to these businesses please) just does not cut it in a historic downtown district. A good backer with theatre ties would help, as cinema, as well as live performances would really help the community.
Starbucks, JambaJuice, et al, no thank you. They belong up the street in a strip mall somewhere.

As the property is zoned "commercial", the public has very little input into the approval process; it's basically for sale to the highest bidder, and at the whim of the insurance company.

Brick building with a huge parking lot buffer? I will hazard a guess and say they are OK.

The biggest tragedy is the loss of the Akebono. Historical loss. Built in 1919.
Real curious as to what caused the fire.
