Will giant vines kill my ohias?
#1
I have several ohia trees which have become homes to very large vining members of the philodendron family such as pothos (variegated ivy), monstera mostrosa (swiss cheese), and one other I don't know the name of. A neighbor told me that they will eventually kill the ohias. Is that true? The look pretty cool, but with the ohias already under siege, I don't want any more to be lost. Thanks for any info!

They do get top heavy and can bring down the Ohia.

I lost several Ohias due to the philadendron choking it out. My tree trimmers had to climb the tree and pull it down but it was too late. Now every time I see a bit of that plant growing (little pieces root and take over) I pull it and dispose of it at the dump. The stink Maile does the same thing if you don't cut it or pull it down. Ohia's are sensitive. They don't like their roots run over either. Good luck keeping your trees healthy!
