I was unaware that there already is an "official landing pad" in Puna, endorsed by the "Lawful Hawaiian Government".

Seeking out alien visitors might seem as improbable as reinstating the Hawaiian Kingdom of more than 120 years ago. But the Lawful Hawaiian Government, which created the alien welcome mat last year, believes it could help advertise its cause. Alien visitors are invited to "establish diplomatic relations" and demonstrate their technologies "for the benefit of all humanity, marine and animal life."

Maybe the inter island ferry needs to be explored again for a purpose like offshore gaming and entertainment.

Wasn't the ferry protested by various groups claiming it desecrated the ocean?

This one in Maryland is now providing 500 million a year for the keiki and public school system

Typically, any "additional" gambling revenue pledged to schools is "siphoned off" by matching cuts to the education budget.

gambling revenue pledged to schools

Let's imagine gambling is legalized in Hawaii.
Control & management is placed under the umbrella of OHA to benefit the Hawaiian people. OHA oversees the gambling revenue like their other sources of income, disperments are made for studies and various multi-million dollar contracts awarded to friends and relatives of OHA officials. Only a small percentage of the money trickles down to directly benefit schools. Another consultant is hired to study how this occurred and perhaps find out who is getting the money. They fail to find any trace of missing funds or wrongdoing.

Then, someone who years earlier suggested the gaming industry would be the salvation of the Hawaiian people and the Hawaiian educational system comments on Punaweb that this tragic mismanagement and diversion of funds is yet another example of the continued oppression of the Hawaiian people.

The circle of life continues.

Gypsy's habit of posting links that contradict his own opinion is becoming legendary, but don't worry, there are always others that will reply if I don't.

The White man's money, investments and promises rarely reach the intended Keiki for education because it's usually siphoned from the other end from state reps and politicians. One million or 500 million a year for education means nothing without proper oversight and management. Some other possible revenue makers besides the TMT project our law makers could venture into could bring even more money and promises than the TMT's without any sacred land issues. Maybe the inter island ferry needs to be explored again for a purpose like offshore gaming and entertainment. This type of gaming and entertainment could provide Many Hawaiians and local folks with jobs, Maybe provide a large sluch fund for politicians, D.O.E, OHA and help the Tourism industry as a whole. Please don't ever change or stop speaking.

I encourage you to speak up louder so the world can see that people like you represent the native Hawaiians I grew up with.

You realize that what gypsy69 is saying is not true right?

The 1 million dollars being paid now by TMT in good faith is the reason you see all these high schools competing at a National level in robotics designs. It's the reason there are many Hawaiian intern students getting paid to work in key areas of technology around the Island.

The accusation that it is a corrupt giveaway run by outsiders is also just that, an accusation. Part of the funds are managed by locals for the locals and they have been doing a good job.

I know many native Hawaiians that want science to be done on Maunakea. They want these partnerships to educate their kids, they want Hawaiians to lead in STEM fields. Don't assume gypsy69 is speaking for everyone or even is stating facts.

I took Mtviewdude's comments to be sarcasm. Sadly, I believe Gypsy's comments to be something akin to sincere.

Oh yeah, we've blown right past the singularity, everything's on the table now.

Don't ever play chess with "him' either. You can't win.
Even if you do, "he'll" spend an infinite amount of time emitting data output to adjust the rules, with redefined rank and movement for "his" pieces and yours, based on which ones remain on the board.

Eric1600, I apologize if my opinion's offended you again. The TMT donation in good faith is wonderful and appreciated but it is certainly not the sole reason why our selected high schools are now competitive or making up for lost time in things like robotics design. The military and government have also been largely involved or behind this catch-up effort from our state. jmo

P.S. I brought up the "Ferry kept offshore" gaming and entertainment idea as an example of another possible direction our state could take if the TMT project finds no common ground and is not allowed on the Hawaiian's sacred ground of Mauna Kea. The TMT project should not be the last chance or opportunity this state could create with it's limited resources. The success or failure of the TMT project should not be used to create fear or uncertainty of tougher times ahead for our youth or communities. jmo

TomK, I had only suggested the possibility of a local run ski resort or food truck opportunity upon Mauna Kea because of your astronomy community wanting to expand again with it's own Disneyland like atmosphere. I grew up here thinking the summit area of Mauna Kea was Kapu, restricted and respected from most if not all. I did not realize Mauna Kea had been sold to countries like China and India or opened up for pre-selected tourism business, my bad. jmo
