Well, what worked in Hawaiian Acres back in the eighties and nineties was Community Watch. Before they instituted CW there were hundreds of burgleries each month. After a very active Community Watch was started, the burglery rate dropped to none or less than three a month. Every car in HA had a bumper sticker identifying it, any car that didn't have a sticker had it's license plate number written down. Sometimes they would ask the folks in the car if they were lost and needed directions. Suspicious cars were followed around. I don't know if they are still doing that, but it worked great at that time.

Another way to lessen theft in your neighborhood is to have the folks gather for various reasons so they all know who everyone is. Since there have been so many new people moving into some of the areas, folks haven't been able to keep track of who is supposed to be in an area and who isn't.

So, Community Watch and neighborhood parties are my suggestions.

Discharging a firearm in a residential area in Texas, backwards as we may be, is also a crime. Discharging a firearm in the act of protecting property, is not. Several instances have occurred, and property owners have been no-billed by grand juries for excercising this right.

My SO had 1 12 pak of coronas stolen Friday from right in front of Cash and Carry!!! He had bought 3 paks for the guys and a thanks for a good day of pouring concrete, as he was loading into the car, put one in, bent over to grab the second and it was gone. FROM RIGHT THERE NEXT TO HIM!!! The theif was pointed out to him and he chased them down. They thought they were getting over on some old guy but hey pouring concrete for a living makees you strong old guy or not. So he picked one of them up and held him upside down. He didnt get the beer back but rumor has it that he scared the CR** out of them.

I dont condone violence but this was pretty much stolen , what about 200 ft from the Pahoa substation!!

does anyone have any experience seeing, catching and/or convicting someone by the use of surveillance cameras?

Has anyone used one of those security cameras and actually had them work well? Our lights on motion sensors go off and on all night because of shifts in air currents from warmer to cooler etc. Those camera with motion sensors seem like they would do the same. Someone smashed in ours on our front porch a couple times so we took it off.

For years folks have written about this being a problem in Puna. It has been a problem where ever you are. My father was a contractor and I remember 40 some years ago going out on jobs with him and nailing floors and such and next day some one took what we left behind or when they weren't looking. This was small town Albany and Lebanon, OR. So it happens all over. My SIL says that she knows it still happens all over there still only worse, take anything not strapped down, even bathtubs etc. or whole walls. Whole walls must save them time on building their own?
My father did eventually make a trailer that they towed each day to the sites. That was mostly the answer.

I was raised to believe that locks were to keep honest people out. That being said I like the Neighborhood Watch and also the bumper sticker thing to denote residents.

I lived on a one lane gravel road for a long time. There were 13 of us on the road. It was every ones habit to wave down unfamiliar cars and ask who they were headed to see and offer directions. It was a friendly and non invasive thing to do, rather neighborly and to offer directions. In 21 years not one burglary there, of course the road was only 1 1/2 miles long.

That x10 site is so funny. Since I started searching I've found so many sites with spy equipment. there's some really funny stuff. all kinds of concealed cameras, phone tappers, bug detectors,.... The funniest thing about the x10 site is that they are always on the final day(s) of a sale.

but seriously, has anyone actually caught people with these camera? Is it worth investing into?

Given to the overwhelming thought of how banks and convience stores etc. use their cameras to catch crooks, I would think that it takes a decent amount of quality equipment to do the job properly? I don't watch TV at all, so you will have to tell me if the current quality of their pictures makes them worth doing?? I have seen print pictures in the paper and they seem good like you could sometimes tell who it is. I haven't know the person or where to find them , so I have not gotten any reward yet either. Nor the big $$ reward for the 10 most wanted!! Darn.

I think I should go into this biz for you all and set up decent cameras on your site and have someone model for the camera and see if we can ID them. Since we all know Rabi's face, but he is on his honeymoon, he is out. The model would have to be one that does attend the Punatic parties, so as to be recognizable by most of you all.

Yes I too have scanned the camers from time to time and found all the gadgets interesting. I think that they fail to mention the pitfalls of these systems and how well they really work towards what you want and need. Then what if the police won't do anything and recognise the offender?
