So I guess my next question is...which one do you guys have experience with and have you heard anything good/bad/ugly about any of them? Howard Dinits says he will put me in touch with someone, but I think you can never be too educated, no?

Thanks Buzz for the info. We are getting closer to our project and would like feedback from anyone w/experience.
We will need an owner-builder construction loan, then permanent financing, preferably a 15-year fixed. We own the land already and will likely have about a third of our building costs in cash. Are there lenders who are cooperative with owner-builders in particular? We have built a three houses ourselves prior to this project (hopefully our last :>)

I like Wells Fargo in Hilo (Phil Maise - 935-3953). American Savings Bank is also good (they have the mortgage on my house). Another good option is Amera Mortgage (935-6711).

Wow you guys! Thanks! I have an amazing list we will be adding to the printouts of the houses we will be checking out in June. Do you know it's actually easier to get information via HIS on Hawaii homes than the info I check out on local Arizona homes? The MLS here is limited unless you "register" and you can only get a few pics of any of the homes here for sale as opposed to the sometimes 25 or 30 pics you can get on Hawaii homes for sale? Well, you can yahoo more info on local homes too, I guess.

Thanks Ann - I've been checking out Hawaii Info Svc daily since last October! hehehehe...it's great! Like I said - hard to find the equivalent here in Arizona - sometimes I wanna check out this market to see what's sold or selling...not as easy as HIS site.
The people on Punaweb rock! You guys have always been so informative and FRIENDLY while doing it. I started out for months on the "other" web forum on the island and to tell you the truth the repetitive info gets old after a while - also I really don't find the aloha I do on Punaweb. JMHO.

I would recommend American Savings Bank (ASB). We refinanced 1 house with them in 1993 and both houses in 2004. They were very good people to deal with. We had some unexpected repairs to make and they were easygoing.
We had one house with Countrywide (BIG Boys,not local) and they were not good to deal with and incompetent when we looked into a second mortgage on one house.
