Doomsday cult Pahoa
#21
I hate to be the guy to say it but are we taxing Jezuz as a BnB or what? I never minded his ragtag bunch of travellers before, but if you are going to commercialize yourself man, you need to pay your fair share.

Sure. Just as soon as Jezuz gets his SUP, accounts with State for GET/TAT, etc.

are we taxing Jezuz...?

He seems to be a one man East Hawaii Cinderland Film Office, promoting the benefits of our local tropical surroundings to the video broadcast industry. Think how much that would cost if he charged the county for his consulting skills?

You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

Given the amount of property being bought and sold, the increased traffic on the roads, the dwindling number of private shoreline spots, I'd say our "local tropical surroundings" are promoting themselves just fine.

I kinda think that all living in Puna are in a doomsday cult just by the fact they are living in Puna. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun until then.

You were not the only one thinking this...

I agree (and I doubt they are paying their taxes), but the state and county create powerful disincentives to do so. Make it almost impossible to legally have a B&B or any short-term rental in Puna due to ag district zoning (including the subdivisions that are mostly useless for agriculture), and then threaten to use the tax system to track people down for illegal rentals if they do pay TAT.

It doesn't help that our good representative Sen. Ruderman wants to make having an illegal rental a felony (it's already a misdemeanor). Thankfully, at least that bill seems to have failed for this year.

Live and let live. Taxes? please! It's not like they are charging $100 plus per night for a yurt. They live under tarps. It's work exchange, where's the income? I watched the show, did you who are griping? They are a bunch of harmless free spirited punatics. Better that these guys & girls live there in Rainbow Village than behind a business in Pahoa or at the bandstand in Hilotown. Some seem mentally challenged. They lovingly care for each other. We could all have a little compassion. Go Jezus.

I watched the show. Jezus is clearly just hamming it up as bananahead thinks. I hope his "followers" are as well but that is less clear. Go Jezus? Really? Go Jezus?

I don't understand what he gets out of it though. Is there a bunch of cash he gets through the stunt somehow? More visitors? I would think it results in a bad/looney reputation that would keep most folks away from the place. Then again, "charisma" never resonates with me the way it apparently does with many folks. Gurus are a lower form of humanity to me. Wink

It was mentioned in passing that men way outnumbered women--would have liked to hear more about why that might be.

Most interesting to me is something of a double standard that seems to apply. Jezus' act is in one sense simply a great big lie, which is dismissed as a joke. If any actual businessperson lied so blatantly to garner more interest in their operation, wouldn't that be considered against the law, or at least bad ethics?

A joke? Not very funny though. Especially to the "followers" if they are legit. Harmless? Probably. Live and let live? Absolutely. But it's still bad, bad form...at least to my eyes. OTOH, to each his/her own.

Cheers,
Kirt
