Amazon to charge tax on purchases made in Hawaii
#1
Unfortunately, this doesn't look like an April Fools joke.

Amazon to charge tax on purchases made in Hawaii starting April 1

Amazon says it will charge tax on online purchases made in Hawaii, according to a spokesperson Wednesday.

The online retail giant told KHON2 in a statement, “Amazon will begin collecting sales tax in the state of Hawaii beginning April 1, 2017.”

Amazon already charges tax on purchases made in several other states.

No word yet on what led to the Hawaii decision.

Gov. David Ige said in a statement, “The state will continue to seek ways to ensure that we collect taxes already owed. The revenue will help pay for vital services for the people of Hawaii.”

The Hawaii State Tax Dept. says it has no comment on the matter.

We figured this was coming, as there have been rumblings about it for years. Amazon started collecting taxes in California a few years ago, but they were calculated retroactively. Awie... I remember my Mom having to come up with hundreds of $ in back taxes.

Time to move.

In California the collection of sales tax was delayed in exchange for Amazon building a number of distribution centers (and creating a bunch of jobs). I believe Amazon was planning those "fullfilment centers" anyway. I understand other states have done something similar. Is Hawaii going to negotiate with Amazon?

Kenney - can you provide a credible link that describes people forced to pay back taxes for Amazon purchases? As a resident of California I never heard of this. Thanks.

Sorry Hi Someday, Mom is the credible link. I just remember her telling me about it. I am not able to prove it but somebody with betters computer skills than I probably can.

So with all this "free bonus money" we don't need to raise taxes? Awesome!

I was actually looking forward to riding the rail from the airport to Waikiki.

Then I found out that the rail won't go to either of those places.

Amazon will now collect sales tax in all 46 states that have a sales tax. However, they will not be collecting that tax if the sale was from one of their third-party vendors.
