I don't know if copper works or not, but all the videos that I've seen, the copper is placed horizontally and the most common application is vertical. There are other fails to the scientific method (inside, artificial lighting, slug boxed in, unknown capture and handling techniques etc etc etc). Deterrents and repellents are never 100% anyway.
