We're in the market for a picnic table. I don't remember seeing any in stores. I sort of recall someone by the side of the road selling tables they made, but it's a vague memory. Any ideas?

Yeah, home depot has them, saw them at Kona not two weeks past, I'd assume Hilo has them as well. Your standard run o' the mill type made from 2x6 lumber. Will definitely need a coating or two in order to survive the elements, but they are fairly sturdy.

Google "picnic table plans". It's a very easy project and you can do way better than the Home Depot product. Build it with decent materials and you won't have to take it to the dump in a year.

Does that mean cedar or redwood? Or the brown ground contact wood? Or just individually stained and sealed treated lumber? Mahalo!

Materials needed depends on where it'll be used. Leave it out in the yard, you'll need ground contact-rated wood and stainless fasteners. On concrete, maybe the cedar or redwood is ok, but more expensive than acq stuff. It'll rot if kept wet. Under a roof protected from the rain, I'd still use the acq stuff or at least the borate treated stuff to keep bugs out of it.

Just bought 2 Convert-A-Bench from QVC. Looks like 2 park benches and when you flip the backs over it creates a table top. Put 2 together and you have a full size picnic table. Made of resin. Each bench holds 1000 lbs. and each table top holds 250 lbs. Very sturdy and durable. Just hose them off. Nothing to rot or rust. Comes in a few different colors, very easy to put together...did it myself. Definitely recommend...extremely happy with mine. I have a screened lanai with attached patio. Benches are used in the lanai and when I need the picnic table on the patio, I just bring them outside, flip the backs and voila...
