Bus from East Side to KOA?
#11
Leilanidude, I don't see a single option under $110. Huge drop-fees everywhere.

other idea is to post here & other areas when you are going...some will take gas money for a Costco run....

Enterprise has a non-airport location in Hilo and no drop fee to KOA. Although, rental companies have begun using the airline ticketing approach and if you book last minute, get zinged... Try calling the Hilo office directly and asking for a rental. 808-934-0359

Might want to try Hawaii Discount Car rental

Got me some great rates between Hilo and Kona. And changing the pickup hour of your car sometimes saves you money

I've done the bus coming back the opposite direction. Walked up the hill to the belt road to catch the bus, quite the walk. Then I tried hitch hiking from Hilo up to Mountain View since the bus was a ways off. I ended up hiking more than hitching. I must have looked dodgy although I thought I was pretty clean cut and presentable. Maybe it was the big backpack. Anyway, leave a lot of time at each end. You can always use the K-mart stop instead of Matsuyama Market.

Wow, a free workout with your trip to Kona.

Hopefully you had fun and met a lot of interesting people along the way.

I guess where there is a 'will' there is a way.

Just curious, what is the savings flying out Kona Vs. Hilo. Read the reviews for Matsuyama Food Mart, apparently it's a popular place to top off the tank before returning the rental. Maybe a good place to hitch a ride.

I just made my costco trip, won't be heading over to Kona side anytime soon, but it's worth it to ask around. Just taking the bus from hilo to Pahoa is bad enough it seems.

Flight I'm looking at is almost $200 cheaper out of Kona...

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll report back if/when I take the trip!

...and it's just a 4-hour bus ride or $50-100 car rental away!

Think of the savings!
