Independence Day & Hawaii
#1
Happy 4th of July!

On July 4th 1776, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted at Philadelphia's State House in the colony of Pennsylvania. The war with the British had started over a year earlier on April 9, 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord.

Also in 1775, thousands of miles west across the largely unexplored North American continent and an expanse of the Pacific Ocean, a young Kamehameha took part in his first battle at Kaupo, Maui, between Kalaniopuu from Big Island and Kahekili of Maui.

Over the subsequent years Kamehameha would rise in prominence, and continue the fight across the island chain for what we call today, unification.

This is always a day I keep my head down and hide the tea.

TomK-
I think we're cool.
After all, you have been kind enough to lend us your flag as an integral part of our state flag here in Hawaii.

Thanks, for the reassurance, HOTPE. I think I'll run up my Union Jack outside my house just in celebration of us being cool. I'm sure everyone will appreciate it... Wink

But the tea stays hidden.

Not to make TomK more paranoid, but does anyone knew about the theory that Kamehameha was actually the one who finished off Cook?

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."

Sorry, not falling for that one again. I've hidden the tea in my car out in the yard which is the last place anyone would think of looking for it...

Hunt,

"Not to make TomK more paranoid, but does anyone knew about the theory that Kamehameha was actually the one who finished off Cook?"

My understanding of the story is that Kamehameha offered Captain Cook some English muffins, but became enraged when Cook told him that there were no such things in England. Some stories also relate to Kamehameha mispronouncing "pasty" and "scone" which led to diplomatic relations breaking down. In a conciliatory approach, Cook offered some cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, but it didn't help restore relations. However, it led to the name "Sandwich Islands".

Seriously, no, I've not heard that theory.

Are you sure it wasn't an argument over how to spell "color"?

Tom, he means "colour". In honour of one of our favourite holidays, let's analyse the issues, practise good judgement, not criticise, and cut to the centre of this lack of organisation in the spelling of words:
