Happy 4th of July!
On July 4th 1776, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted at Philadelphia's State House in the colony of Pennsylvania. The war with the British had started over a year earlier on April 9, 1775 with the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
Also in 1775, thousands of miles west across the largely unexplored North American continent and an expanse of the Pacific Ocean, a young Kamehameha took part in his first battle at Kaupo, Maui, between Kalaniopuu from Big Island and Kahekili of Maui.
Over the subsequent years Kamehameha would rise in prominence, and continue the fight across the island chain for what we call today, unification.
