I noticed they have cable strung now from the ocean up through 4th and Makuu (including the dead end sections).I got my hopes up that maybe after 30 years of trying to get cable that it finely might happen. But they stopped at 5th (where I'm at) .

I have Hawaii Telcom DSL in Orchid Land. It is stable and fast enough for me to work my mainland job. In the past 6 months we have only had a 4 day period with intermittent line drops. We called each time it was down. Whatever the issue was they corrected it.
I am temporarily house sitting in HPP where they have Aloha Broadband. It's horrible. If that's all I had available I would be back on the mainland as I would be unable to work. I can connect to my VPN but that's it. I experienced the 0.3 Mbps.

Hey Susan - you mentioned using HT DSL for your mainland job: do you use Web Meeting (i.e. WebEx) or any other type of shared space (that everyone can access live to see the same documets/presentations)? I do so daily and wondered if the DSL over there would be able to handle that...

I have used 3mb down by 1 up for webex with DSL back when I lived in Kapoho. It worked OK. I am currently at 7mb down by 1 up and it works not really any differently. I do have a Verizon Mifi 4G device that I keep active for a backup. It works really well, but at around $100 a month for 3 to 4gb of data, gets pricey. I believe I am paying around $60 a month for the DSL and unlimited phone.

Yes I use WebEx and Skype with my team mates and customers.
I also have a back up Verizon Mifi.
I offered to pay HT double my 55.00 a month for upgraded service but it's all they offer.
It's good enough to let me move here and keep my job.
So thankful for it.

Susan, you can pay for a commercial DSL line and get faster speeds, but it will cost dearly. In my location, that equates to $450 a month... I have tried, off and on for years, to order a second 7x1 line to my house, but "all the ports are full". If you have 2 lines, there is a way to use a special router that takes advantage of the extra bandwidth. I would gladly pay for it if a port ever became available.

"all the ports are full"
The sad part is, they could easily add more linecards, the remote cabinet/fiber uplink are the expensive/difficult part.
$450 a month
With the right bundle/discounts this is more like $225, which can be worth it if you need symmetrical bandwidth and real IP addresses with an actual SLA.

I tried getting commercial DSL to Orchidland. No dice.
If you need faster speed, Verizon's home service is MUCH faster than DSL, and also MUCH more expensive.

No dice.
I've seen it on the Red Road, which is far more "rural" than OLE.

Must have been an employee or board member down there who could make it happen.
