Can anyone recommend a good GPS tracking device? They all seem to be very expensive, many even have monthly fees.

Do you have access to wifi or need a cellular connection?

And stream it to a networked video recorder (NVR) that is offsite or setup your computer to upload data to dropbox or something periodically. Most of these cameras can send alerts and be viewed over your phone.

It has options to set motion alerts. You can also have it automatically upload photos and video clips to the internet as well when the alarm is triggered. I mostly use it to check on our pets when we are away.

we have been getting hammered in mountain view. eden roc, kopua farmlots, fern acres. they've cut illegal roads between the subdivisions. they operate late at night, early in the morning. houses have been broken into and ransacked. guns are being shot. atv's are out of control. the police have been notified and reports have been taken. it is very hard to catch these criminals. the cops all say the same thing - call them anytime you see anything, and buy cameras!

Hawai#699;i Island police are investigating a robbery that occurred (July 12) in lower Puna.

At about noon, two men were driving on Government Beach Road in the Waa Waa (Kapoho area) when a sedan forced them off the side of the road. After both vehicles came to a stop, the front seat passenger from the sedan pointed a handgun at the victims and ordered them out of their car.

The suspect then fired one shot in the air before fleeing with the victim’s vehicle, identified as a blue 2007 Honda Accord EX-L, 4-door sedan, Hawai`i License Plate ZDV 954.

The victims, a 19-year-old and a 24-year-old, both of Hilo, safely escaped into the brush after the shot was fired and were not injured.

The suspect’s vehicle could only be described as a light blue older-model sedan that may have been driven by a short, heavy set male without a shirt.

The gunman, who was wearing a bandana covering the lower portion of his face, is described as being between 5-feet-7 to 5-feet-8 inches with a thin build, having light-colored skin and green eyes. He has black hair in a Mohawk-cut, and was last seen wearing a black tank top and plaid shorts.

Thanks for the suggestions - but I'm afraid that it was all over with by the time my neighbor called the fire department. I guess it was fortunate that she didn't catch them in the act - since they could have gone after her. But it was a total loss - these clowns couldn't get the car started and damaged the body trying to break into the trunk; destroyed the car's electrical system trying to hot wire it; and the heat of the fire melted a good bit of the plastic trim. So it's a good bet that the car was totaled.

In this case, even with a camera system, there wasn't enough left of the house for the recorder to survive. The fire investigator's first comment when he came to the site was "this is what we call a smoking hole in the ground..."

I am, after we rebuild, going to install a system that notifies me pretty much as soon as someone sets foot on the property. And make it a good deal more difficult for someone to even do that. "Once burned, in this case quite literally, twice shy..."

Sorry for your loss. I like to add a few game cameras on top of surveillance cameras. They are rarely found by burglars. Try leaving one watching house and one watching entrance or road. The time required to find a hidden game in a wooded area can be large. They require more maintenance but can be effective during crime sprees and they do actually capture images of wildlife on occasion and that fun to see.

From what I can see, I doubt that they got more than $1000 worth of goods at current theft mart prices...
