Island Residents Urged to Prepare "Safe Rooms"
#1
Officials from the Big Island reported to state lawmakers that they suggest residents prepare "safe rooms" regarding the ongoing eruption of dangerous gases from Kilauea Volcano...

More Here

Just the other day, I received an Emergency Check off list sent by Rep. Hanohano, and one of the dangers mentioned, was Volcanic Eruptions.

That's not exactly what it says, Damon.

The safe rooms will be prepared at the public schools, in case there's no time to evacuate from a high alert.

Residents are not being told they need a safe room in their house. They're told to go inside when the vog gets heavy, not to exercise, same as with a smog alert in LA.

I have friends in HOVE which had a one morning purple evacuation alert last spring. The kids were told to go to the school in Na'alehu. So now the school will provide some air purification. Good. The whole alert lasted 2-3 hours and then the kids could go home.

"So, what we're advising the community is be prepared for an announcement to come out and stay indoors, minimize your outdoor activity, but basically shelter in place in your own residence," Hawaii County Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira said.

Actually, I think he was correct although headlined to be a bit alarmist. The article could certainly have been written better.

I had already thought about that. I wonder what would be a good cheap filter method. Charcoal? Homemade filter of two screens with coneycomb between filled with fine charcoal. It would be made to cover all exterior windows. A whole-house fan would be used to pull air gently through the filter screens. Stored in shed when not needed. Just thinking. I don't even know if charcoal will help.

Oh OK, I see it now. I could edit my first post, but then the replies wouldn't make sense.

Well, they can suggest all they want, but it sounds to me like they're just doing CYA, suggesting something that's not practical for many or even most people, but no one can say they weren't advised.

How practical would they be at schools?

I can't imagine the size of a room to hold 500-2000 students, faculty, staff and any community members that might need to use it?

DOE doesn't even have money for Air Conditioners in regular size classrooms less yet something to this extent.

Her list was reprinted from the "Emergency Checklist" prepared by the Hawaii Civil Defense.

It can be found here

* I also suggest looking at this site in general.

Mahalo; Dude You're fast. Already seen this list and have it. We live in an earthquake area's so just makes sense to have emergency kits at home and in each vehicle. Was hoping this list was geared more to BI, but guess same rules apply.
