Hawaiian Telcom DSL Problems ?
#11
Finally got through to someone today who seemed to know what she was doing. All record of our DSL order and modem shipment have disappeared from the system, so we are starting over for the third time. This lady swears we will have modem and service by the end of the week. We'll see!!

Aloha,
Jerry

Broadband providers are beginning to limit the content that you download especially if it's heavy broadband dependent. If you tend to download alot of videos, music, or other heavy data, then expect lower speeds. I don't know how this works on specific users but I've noticed slower speed over the past year even after I just bought a new computer.

I've read reports of ISPs throttling speeds.
But its not terribly widespread. Unless you
are downloading alot, there isn't really much to worry about.

Actually it sounds like your computer might be infected with spyware, viruses (unless you are really downloading alot), to cause the speed drop.

Hopefully the new bandwidth will get turned on tomorrow.
As the download speeds are getting worse.
Bearin mind I have 3Mbps/768K connection

OK. I just verified I have no viruses or other stuff blocking my computer.
Hawaiian Telcom DSL shows a test speed of 5 Kbps. I plan to call and complain this week. If I can't get any result from them, can we switch to another DSL provider or are we limited to HT?

Thanks

Sorry, that was 50 Kbps, but still 90% less than standard DSL.

Have you always gotten slow speeds ? If you
have and verified you don't have spyware/viruses on your computer. I would check
to see if your computer is tweaked for broadband speeds.

Yes you can go with a 3rd party DSL provider.
But it usually costs more. Same thing with
switching to Road Runner.

As far as I understood today was the day the new bandwidth was going to
be turned on. As far as I checked by doing speed tests and trace routes
that hasn't happened yet. I'm crossing my fingers it will happen tomorrow.
As the download speeds are still quite bad.

I ran the test with very similar results. I wonder if they will give us a refund for poor service?

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-07-05 23:19:20 EST:

575 / 129
Your download speed : 575 kbps or 71.9 KB/sec.
That is 15.5% worse than an average user on hawaiiantel.net

Your upload speed : 129 kbps or 16.1 KB/sec.
That is 59.5% worse than an average user on hawaiiantel.net

Probably not likely. But we shall see, if it
extends for a few more days that assesment may
change.
