Didn't know you guys are from the Cruz! I lived there from '72-'80.then moved to Oahu.

Spent a few years there recently, as well. It's a very special place.**S** I used to live on Branicforte, down the street from Shoppers Corner.

That's super that CindyV is from S.C. and is building in Leilani.

I'll bet there's a fair sized contigent of Santa Cruz folks in the Puna area. I noticed several vehicles with Santa Cruz bumper stickers, during our last visit.

We're in the middle area of Leilani. Is that considered upper or lower?

Hope to play for you over at Paolo's. I hear it's an excellent restaraunt and the atmosphere is ideal for solo guitar, imho.

I just listened to the samples of your new album via the link below your signature and I was so impressed that I had to buy one! I'm really looking forward to listening to the entire CD. Your musical style happens to be my absolute favorite. What a coup for Paolo's if they are lucky enough to have you play. Wow!

I'm sure there are lots of folks on the BI from Santa Cruz and I'm discovering more all the time. It seems to be a natural progression for those of us who love Santa Cruz but just can't take the overcrowding and traffic congestion any longer. Our house is on Morrissey, very near Branciforte and we are moving in the next few months....can't wait!

Yes, there's definitely a S.C. contigent in Puna. Our dear friends Andrea & Maria Tichler tell us their planning on moving over this fall.

The Shoppers Corner area of S.C. really is special. It's still a wonderful place, but for me, by '80 it was time to move on. Still love to visit though.

Back to the insurance issue, when Pele last visited Kalapana, some of the houses had fire insurance and were covered, some had fire insurance and were not covered since their insurance companies said it was the lava that got there first. I didn't pay attention to the details, but you may want to find some folks who would know the particulars of what is actually "fire" and what is actually "lava" - at least according to the insurance companies definition of things. Otherwise, you may end up being one of the ones who's insurance company said it was the lava that did it and won't pay. Of course, if you have a big mortgage, then at least the mortgage folks will be on your side against the insurance folks should it ever come to that.

Even though our insurance agent stated that any damage caused by fire, including fire from lava, would be covered, after reading Cathy's post I had to go back and read our policy again. It's with Lloyd's and clearly states that "...but if volcanic eruption or explosion results in fire, building glass breakage or volcanic action, we will pay for the loss or damage caused by that fire". So, thanks for bringing that up but it looks like the Lloyd's policies are the ones that cover such a loss. Of course we are not anticipating any such problems but it doesn't hurt to be covered, eh?

Good thoughts to share there with others, Cathy! Clarify what is and what is not covered.

I would add to that, having been a property/casualty insurance agent before, that what is written in their policy is what is covered, then read what is excluded too. It can be confusing reading them, with riders or attachments to them sometimes.

Also if they say it is covered, if unsure, ask to be shown where in the policy that is.
I found that many folks just did not understand what coverages/exclusions they had on their insurance policies, so I would explain it to them in easy to understand terms. It is a good idea to just review it with your agent too, since situatiosn change.

If you did have a Lava flow approaching your house, in Hawaii, it usually is slow moving over ground, maybe you could move your house to some other existing property, as was the case with some who a rich philanthropist gave some lots to those who lost theirs in the 80's when the lava flowed quite heavily through Royal Gardens. You still own your lot, you may just not be able to live on it ever again. The other thing is if you are of sound mind at a point like that and there is a clear easy way out of your subdivision and so you are there till the last moment or with a telephoto lens, can take a clear picture of your house showing that the fire starts burning before the lava hits, that might hold up in court if it would prove that it was fire from burning vegetation. So be sure and get a good shot! Kinda like weather chasers.... Hey if this is all you got to go on, might as well try it. Look first at helicopters views of the place to know you are safe or something!!
What would it be like if the lava split and went around on either side of your house and now you were an island unto your own, living out there by yourself?
Someone has a BnB out there like that. Wild way to live!

As matter of interest, No one ever does, (Maybe)...unless it could be one of those intentional cases of fraud, (like arson) burning your own house/car or something like that. Believe me, I have even had people confess things like that with me to file a claim against the company. Or Offering me part of the $$ Take! I guess they were so excited by what they would profit from it, either that or just real stupid. I vote for the latter one.

<but it looks like the Lloyd's policies are the ones that cover such a loss.> Policies are different too, can be if you do not live in the dwelling but are renting it out, so don't assume anything until you check it out for yourself, through your agent or your policy. Just be on the safe side!
