This string is titled "2014 - 2015 -- 56% of Big Island coral died." Until recently I thought bleaching killed coral, too. It doesn't. And, one of my sons is a long line fisherman. The foreign crew are not slaves. The captains and owners find very few local fishermen who can or will do this work.

Although many here may not want to admit it, Hawaii's number #1 industry may be partly to blame for Hawaii's recent coral reef loss.

Some may want to punish and blame the local fisherman and local families for over fishing rather than see the truths in the matter. Personally, I believe Large resorts like the ones on the Kona coast may also be dumping or diverting millions of gallons of grey water back into the ocean at times. I also think large Cruise ships, tourist fishing and diving boats can contribute to the reef pollution and damage as well. jm2cents and opinions.

If the tourists who visit Hawaii are catching and killing all the fish in the sea, we better expedite construction of the TMT. According to gypsy himself, his studies show at least a million tourists a year will drive to the summit of Mauna Kea to see the new telescope. If tourists are at 14,000 feet in elevation, as far from the seashore as is possible on the island, it should not only stop but reverse our ongoing loss of fish and coral.

No, but I think it's important to look at every possible solution to the serious problems facing our coral reefs, and impacts on Hawaii's fish population. If as you've said, one million tourists are driving up the mountain, doesn't that mean there are one million less tourists on the seashore?

And conversely if tourists drive uphill, doesn't that mean they're not downhill?
