Since the search engine is still down, I know this has been covered before, but I can't seem to find the info.
Any ways who has the best cell service for the puna area? Are their area's that I wont get service? As far as subdivisions?

Verizon is pretty good in general. But it depends on the subdivision and even the area inside it.

All the companies give a free trial period. The best thing to do is try, try, try until you find one that works best in the areas you will be in most. Most of my friends have T-Mobil and AT/T.

I live in Eden Roc and my carrier is At&t(Cingular). It works well, although you can get alot of dropped calls in Eden Roc. No specific spot, if you call and complain to them, within the next few hours your calls are excellent and no problems for weeks. I also have Verizon for my Internet connection, we are not supposed to receive service out here, and it is fast at some times and slow other times, but much better than dial-up.

We visit Puna several times a year. We used to have Sprint, which had no coverage at all until we got near Hilo. Really frustrating.
We now use T-Mobile. When there's no T-Mobile tower nearby, it automatically switches to AT&T and we use their network at no charge. Coverage is fine except for a very, very occasional Dead Zone like Damon said.
We liked their Friends and Family plan (unlimited talk to 5 numbers from anywhere) better than any plan AT&T offered. We always need to keep in touch with family on the mainland while were here.
Just my two cents.

Friends don't let friends buy nextel cell service in Puna. We lived in vacation rentals all over Puna our first year and the darn phone didn't work at a single place we lived!

I had Verizon for two years in Puna. It wasn't wall-to-wall coverage but it was okay. I now have AT&T (iPhone) and it seems to work just as well. Puna's rural, so don't expect complete coverage from any service. AT&T's 3G network seems to have some coverage in Puna, at least between Volcano and Hilo along the highway.
