Need a recommendation for an competent ophthalmologist. Or maybe who to stay away from.

https://www.eyewearhilo.com/ I got excellent glasses for good price. Dr. Rick Carpenter's prescription made progressive glasses I can't see out of. Had them checked over and over & the prescription was wrong. So because I used his prescription. at a mainland eyewear store, I'm on the hook for $500. JMHO

Agree. I had been with Rick Carpenter for years when he was in the old location but, after he moved to the bigger spot some years ago and I was not examined by him personally, I looked for another Dr. That Dr found the macular degeneration that Carpenter's team had missed. That Dr has now left the state but I have been satisfied with Walmart's services lately.

royal, i see answers to optometrist, if that is alright with you i have gone to the Maeda's for years and they are very thorough, and have the latest machines. it is very hard to get glasses through the mail i think. the Maeda's are very very good. and also check for diseases of the eyes.

It's standard policy in optical shops to provide a customer with what they call a "redo" for any reason if you're not happy with your glasses, or the prescription is wrong, they will make a replacement pair at no charge.

They don't like to do this if they don't have to, but it's not as great a hardship on them as it might seem. I had a friend who managed an optical department and here's an example of some of their actual costs:

Frames they sell at $200, they purchase for $15-$35
Simple lenses (in stock blanks) are $5 each, more complex prescriptions might be $20 each

They have plenty of room in their markup to help you get a pair of glasses that are correct, even if it's the prescribing doctors fault. My optical department friend had a particular dislike for specific eye doctors as they sent him a large number of incorrect prescriptions which he had to redo and pay for. The bill never gets sent back to the doctor who may have caused the mistake in the first place.

Reason I'm looking for a good Dr is I've had a few episodes of some strange vision anomalies. It isn't a prescription thing, there is something going on in the eyes and just don't want somebody just guessing at what it might be. Kinda spooky when it comes to your vision.....

I second Hawaii Vision Specialists. An ophthalmologist and optometrist on staff (Dr Driscoll carried out my eye surgery a couple of years ago in Hilo). Very professional, competent and friendly medical staff although somewhat less-than-friendly reception staff. Once you get through reception you're in good hands.
