The key is that it should be a good plan. In my case, I would have to drive 20-30 miles a week to get my mail, instead of walking 1/2 mile to my current box. As it is, I get exercise, and don't burn fossil fuels. Multiple that by 11,500 HPP residents.

So how about consolidation and upgrade as an option, not yet another governing body forced drive due to bad zoning that won't offer us a choice and is bad for the environment?

Such as: each "neighborhood commercial" area includes the mailboxes for that neighborhood?

Unfortunate that USPS can't take a more active role -- being as "Federal law pre-empts", they could trivially circumvent the zoning issue.

My issue with the $150/lot fee for new mailboxes wasn't that there would be new mailboxes in 4 designated areas thruout HPP, which would be GREAT, it was that I didn't trust that the area would maintained or that the money would be spent responsibly. It would add additional space for HPPOA crews to take care of and they can't even maintain the roads and easements as it is. If they could take care of what we have, and if there weren't so many issues about transparency of spending, then I'd be more than willing to pay the fee. Not sure people with undeveloped lots would, though. ... And yeah, I agree that snail mail will soon be pau no matter what, so the problem might just take care of itself. I wouldn't mind going to the PO if that were the only solution. Especially if it were an expanded and improved PO.

I feel the same for the same reasons. I wasn't happy w/the idea of going up to 15th/16th K to get my mail.

Remember, the "plan" by Dist 2 rep and her mailbox committee was to use a 20 acre parcel off Kaloli Phase 1, CS the platform, all the purchased boxes would have our physical adrs. The "extortion" via threatening members to pay or pay a late fee to get the funding, went south and so did the whole shebang after members were extremely agitated.

Dist 2 rep has publicly blamed those that already have mailboxes as the reason it went south...nothing to do w/their bylaw breaking method. Questions also arose over the traffic it may cause on the main drag going in and out of this area during peak traffic hours. The previous board and board pres Randi Larzalere, failed to mention that a lot of members complained about the neglect of our roads and easements as a reason not to pay into the mailbox agenda. Many said once the roads and easements are taken care of (after they just raised the road fees 10%), then they'd reconsider helping fund the mailbox project.

At the Feb 2017 membership mtg, members tried to form a Membership Mailbox Committee. Former dist 5 rep (after Maynard), obstructed that from occurring enticing them to join the board controlled mailbox committee instead. So the question is, Obie, what did you and your board controlled committee accomplish? Why aren't you still on that committee?

The mailbox committee should be a membership committee, not a board committee, since the board has no authority other than maintaining our roads and easements. Funding may have to come via members fund raising, obtaining grants etc for the mailboxes?

Once the current board pres rightly pointed out to Dist 2 rep at a board mtg that the use of the 20 acre parcel is zoned only for parks and schools, Dist 2 rep argued the pt still wanting to proceed nevertheless. Dist 2 rep has said to others that the mailbox agenda was going to be her legacy (she has until Jun 2018 to fulfill that). (CS is also supposed to be her legacy) The pres pressed the issue, saying there's no argument that HPP needs more mailboxes, BUT it has to be done "right" so there are NO REPERCUSSIONS later. Repercussions usually end up costing the association more $$$ to fix..i.e. CS

Is the reason not to home deliver due to 137 miles driven daily = hiring more delivery drivers = more fuel. Or the answer I was given 10 yrs ago, "HPP decided a long time ago to use cluster boxes". Let's not forget the other issues we have now... many miles of neglected roads = no road gravel = huge potholes = fugitive dust = [V]

The hoa’s 20 acres can be used for a community use like a post office. Watamul restricted commercial use because they want to sell their 6 lots.

Or if not sell their lots, lease them out. The Watamulls also only pay one road fee for all 20 acres.

Seeb, please tell me where you got the info on the ability to use the 20 acres for Post ofc use? The current board has reviewed the documents and their conclusion, like previous boards pre Jul 2014, was only parks and schools.

I know a former HPPOA board member who actually sat down with the Watamul family chief a few years ago to discuss those properties. At that time they were neither interested in selling nor developing those parcels. The family rep did, however, say that if anyone was interested in commercial property in Puna, he had some outside of HPP that he was willing to discuss. So much for that.

Make a boatload of money subdividing a lava field, but show no interest in allowing development of a few services for the people who live there. The very people I might add, who provided them with (no doubt) a fairly decent livelihood over the years.

Now here's another Good Neighbor with no interest in making life a little easier for Puna residents. I'm not sure of the accuracy of the post (someone else know?) but apparently the NO ACCESS ROAD FOR YOU Shipman family wants to build an access road behind their plantation house in Keaau. Through a Native Hawaiian heiau. And burial ground:

I don't know of the accuracy of that report BUT I do remember when I attended a mtg sev yrs ago in HPP regarding the PMAR, Shipman reps stated they wanted an access route on the mauka side of the highway, not makai, which would give more direct access to Keaau town.
