It sounds like many of you already have mail boxes, consider yourself lucky. The post office in Keaau has a waiting list, so for many their mail has to be picked up in Hilo. So driving a few miles for your mail won't get much sympathy with those folks. It would be nice if people thought about the problems that other members of HPP might have.
I doubt that mail will ever go away in Hawaii for two reasons: We ship everything in. Secondly, the state still won't accept electronic payments for many things or even a credit card.

It would be even nicer if Puna stopped playing "my subdivision can beat up your subdivision".

The problem that EVERYONE has in HPP is that were paying through the nose for Road Maintenance and not getting any.
When the BOD fulfills their responsibility to the Membership to manage a lawful , transparent Association, and fulfill their road responsibilities, other projects can be undertaken. We don’t have lines, reflectors or signs, aggregates on roads. This is a safety issue.
The roads must be priority. We are not getting fined by DOH because we don’t have enough mailboxes.
That doesn’t mean “people don’t think about “ (or care) about “problems that other members of HPP have”.

Let existing mailboxes remain in place for those who have them.
Build new boxes in several consolidated locations around HPP for those who don't.

The problem that EVERYONE has in Puna is that we're paying fuel tax, property tax, and GET, but not getting any services or representation.
This is a problem that EVERYONE has, regardless of whether they live in HPP, Orchidland, Ainaloa, Hawaiian Acres, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores Rec, Nanavale, Fern Acres, Eden Roc, Fern Forest, Glenwood ...
It wouldn't be so bad if County could just get out of the way, but no, they spend our tax dollars actively obstructing progress.
It's far, far bigger than mailboxes or "fugitive dust" or "rogue board shenanigans".
It's also far, far easier for County if the individual subdivisions fight their pointless internal battles, each separately addressing similar issues.
We are not getting fined by DOH because we don't have enough mailboxes.
Nor are the DOH fines making any difference in the outcome.

The only thing I use my PO box for is to pickup my yellow notices and bring to the window and KTA coupons. On the mainland USPS has already started with informed delivery in which they scan your mail and send images by email. One step closer to no need for delivery. I pay all my bills in HI with online banking no issues.

We did our time waiting for a mailbox in HPP...we rec'd our mail through a private mail place in Hilo for about a year @ $30+ per month. Then we got a POB at Keaau post ofc and had to pay $ every month for another year. I forgot how much it was. After 2 yrs we got a box in HPP. So IMO, that's a broad stroke remark to say people don't empathize w/others going through this. How about the elderly who can't drive anymore?!!
BTW, those mailboxes on 14th Kaloli, a friend said it looked more like someone backed into them, not cross a center line. I agree. So short steel posts placed in key spots of the concrete pad could protect the mailboxes.
HOTPE, your idea was already tossed around, and I myself thought that would be a great option. But the mailbox committee (Mizuba, Murdoch, Sodan and L. Crelly) reported it was ALL OR NOTHING "per USPS" and part of that all or nothing was WE HAD TO PURCHASE x amt of mailboxes AND provide a location, concrete pad etc. The mailbox committee sd that USPS wanted to deliver to centralized spots only, no more cluster boxes around the park.

USPS doesn't currently deliver to the existing boxes. That's why we are a HC or Highway Contract Route. Private contractors bid on the delivery route, and USPS accepts the lowest bid. The delivery people are not postal employees and do not receive postal benefits.
99% of the private carriers time is spent sorting mail into boxes, 1% driving from one location to another. Centralizing the locations and doing away with existing boxes would save almost nothing a year, and it would turn perfectly functional mailboxes into garbage, again, not good for the environment.

I agree with you Kalakoa. The County is getting off Scott free while we go round and round (and get nowhere) in the various underserved Subdivisions.
The DOH fines do effect the outcome of road maintenance though. The more we spend on fines, the less we have for the roads. The money that is collected is for fixing the roads instead of paying DOH because we didn’t.

Yes that's correct HOTPE but the end result was still for delivery to be centralized. I agree w/your other points but according to the mailbox committee, the USPS is dictating all the criteria, and we have to purchase a specific # of boxes and install them (obviously) somewhere, if we want more mailboxes in HPP. And of course there's the other obstacle, our bylaws have no provisions for the board to be handling mailbox business, only road maint.
