Possible New Ag Restrictions For Roosters

I received Eileen O'Hara's newsletter today.
One of the items on the county council agenda is amending the Ag zoning code to require anyone with more than 4 roosters to house birds a minimum of 75 feet from all property boundaries.

The effect of the change would mean that in HPP for instance, with lots roughly 135 feet wide, the greatest distance to a property line would be 67 feet.

If it passes, bye bye rooster "farms." Hopefully opponents are bad at math.

This will be viewed by many (not me) as an assault on a "cultural tradition." If it somehow passes, don't expect enforcement to amount to anything, even on the usual report driven basis. It's already against the law to fight roosters, and we all know how successful that has been in suppressing the practice.

Who will enforce the law?

Lots of laws on the books that are not being enforced.

Don't get me wrong........ I hate A-hole neighbors that want to plant 500 roosters on a small 1 acre lot in a housing development making it miserable for anyone within 5000 feet.

What if they buy 2 or 3 lots? Most Spaghetti lots are around 125-150' wide, I think Hawaiian Acres has the widest ones, with exception to the square lots. With all the blue tarps, sheds and shacks, unpermitted cesspools, Barking dogs, etc...etc....etc... Just add one more rule to the "unenforceable" BS that happens here on this island.

The only hope is to buy a nice lot, with well established neighbors that think alike, and if anyone thinking of buying the vacant lot, wanting to throw up a rooster, dog breeding, goat herding, etc...etc.. will instantly feel the vibes of the entire hood coming out with pitch forks and lighting up the torches.

Maybe I am missing something, but I just don't understand. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

People who raise chickens for eggs generally keep hens, which is a legitimate agricultural use of their property and it remains unrestricted. If they want fertilized eggs, they can still have up to four roosters, and they'll be unaffected by the potential change.

If however, people want to pretend raising 100 roosters is a type of farming, they may need to find a 5+ acre property Hoss, their own little Ponderosa, ridin' the range, roundin' up and herdin' the little doggies. My solution? GMO roosters, genetically modified so they're unable to crow, squawk, or even buck, buck, bwack.

Yeah, you are missing, not living next to a fricken rooster farm!

You are also missing that, Hawaiian Beaches, Parks subdivisions are all zoned residential, yet plenty rooster farms there.

I don't understand why half acre lots can be zoned AG which allows lot owners to have multiple roosters. Kaloli Pt has roosters running amuck bc of an irresponsible lot owner/former HPP board rep that abandoned them when she moved away. She had several roosters at any given time.

Rooster farms do not produce "agricultural" noise. They are gambling operations.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Plenty to learn and love here. But, just because you bought a tiny .3 acre lot with CCR's, and Zoning and all the other rules and regulations, doesn't mean crap here. People just do what they "think" is right for them. Like I said, before buying a lot, you gotta go scope out the hood and talk story with the neighbors and get a feel from them if they will back you in case someone wants to move in with "other" ideas, for noise and air quality.

my ability to provide ethical food, in a Ag area

Male chickens raised for meat are called capons, and they're castrated at about 2-3 months of age, well before an uncastrated rooster would start crowing at 5 months old. This keeps most of the capons from crowing, and the ones that do you can eat first.

Unfortunately, a rooster farm at 250 feet isn't any quieter than at 75 feet.

The USPS is the only transportation option available to get these 'show birds' to market. Good luck getting them to change.
