Gateway Center/Costco
#1
Any new updates on the Gateway Center shopping center in Ka'u. I read KTA and Lowes are going
to be anchor tenants. I read Lowes at least will be completed in 2007.

Costco is evidenyly going in across the street
from Home Depot (behind Wal-Mart) by 2007 also ?

I am bringing this forward because I saw on the Dark Side another reference to it opening in 2007. How do you find something out like this? I mean Costco doesn't announce it, do they? I sense it would be a real money maker for the east side. Can't imagine it not working out.

Also - I DO shop at Wal-Mart but have to admit feeling a little guilty after so many 20/20 and other news shows going over to India and the working conditions and God-awful pay these people make. Also they tend to be rough on their own employees. A Costco would be a nice answer to having to drive to the west side each month to load up.

Costco announced last year that they had postponed indefinitely any plans to build in East Hawaii due to unreasonably high construction costs. Lowe's could be another matter, though. They DO have a habit of putting one across the street from a lot of Home Depot stores, but I haven't heard about a Hilo location. My experience with Lowe's on the mainland was that they were friendlier and better organized than Home Depot.

Dang! I have to agree with that. With all the remodeling we've done here...I dread going into Home Depot. Lowe's seems to have more of a selection with a lot of things, too.

I think that a Costco on this side would be a great thing. For a lot of reasons. Their philosophy of employee relations is 180 degrees out of phase with Walmart's philosophy. I don't think that there is a Costco employee anywhere in their system who is on welfare and/or without GOOD medical insurance. These IS no IHateCostco.com web site that I've ever seen. Must be a reason.

Besides... where but at a Costco can you make that impulse (buy necessary) purchase of a 55 gallon drum of Oreo cookies?

Went to the Shipman meeting last week, Kimo Lee was asked about Costco, they do get a good % from the East side (but I, of course, have forgotten the details) It does seem to currntly be still a speculation of when, but that Costco ( & SAMS) have interest in this side, they did have plans earlier, but construction cost & labor costs recently had them back off some of their plans

Holy Moly! 55 gals of Oreos. (Reminds me of the Monty Python bit where the big giant man explodes after just one more thin mint LOL!)

I wonder - I mean they have a Costco in Kona...since the east side is shipping side and all products come through this harbor then you would think it would actually be less to build one than over in Kona, right? Hmmm.

Personally , I really can't believe that Lowes would anchor itself in such a small community in Ka'u. It would definately have to be a scaled down operation....which then makes me wonder why anyone from Hilo would drive an hour to Ka'u when they can drive 2 hours and have more variety in the Lowes superstore in Kona?

With regard to Costco in Hilo.... I personally feel we don't need one. We have the large Costco in Kona....which I drive to about three times a year (beautiful drive) to stock up on stuff... and we already have "Cost-U-Less" in Hilo... which isn't as large as Costco...but they have the same bulk quanity selection and price (in a scaled down version of a Costco store).
