Hilo gas prices continue to fall
#1
The lowest gas price in Hilo is now hovering around $3.84 a gallon. And it's still going down. Oil fell today below $70.00 a barrel.

We may well be in a major depression... but at least gasoline here is starting to be more affordble. Now all we need is the electric to go down along with airfares.

I wonder what Helco and the airlines are waiting for? Oil has dropped by more than half...and my electric bill continues to go up along with airfares!

It would be interesting to ask them just that question.

The fuel cost base rate was set April 5, 2007 to become effective June 13, 2008. Fuel cost rose after April 5 2007. HELCO's ability to raise rates to recoup the higher cost is capped. They can raise the rates (after approval) because of the added fuel cost but it's not a direct pass along to you at current cost. So if fuel rose 100% they may be limited to a much smaller maximum increase. In other words, they must pay out what the market charges for fuel, but they can only collect that increase at a smaller rate over a longer period of time.

Guess this means we can now go out and start buying our big gas-guzzling trucks again. I'm sure some folks are already thinking about it.

Not that I'm complaining about the price drop, but does anyone on this forum really believe that this is a permanent situation?

Sorry if I offended. There's always a distinction between need and want. I can only assume you don't have to go out and buy your guzzler since you obviously need it/already have it.

In the end it's the individual's choice. Just hope the "wanters" (for their own sake) aren't lulled into believing this is a permanent state of affairs. We'll see what happens after the election.

Aloha :-)
