People have been talking about Mauna Loa (Ka'u district specifically) as being one of the optimal sites to anchor a space elevator for decades now. Geothermal energy would be optimal for this kind of endeavor and the remote location would be perfect as well.
Granted space elevators are still in the future, but just saying there are a lot of reasons why Hawaii would make a good space port.

Space elevators, I've always loved that idea. But now I doubt anything as radical could ever go ahead, with all the NIMBYs and luddites out there.

It requires less energy to launch a satellite into orbit closer to the equator. South Point, like Cape Canaveral has a large expanse of ocean east of any launch facility they might choose near the coast. Should something go wrong with a launch, it shouldn't affect a populated area on the ground, but fall harmlessly into the sea.
I'm sure there are people already concocting one in a trillion scenarios where an off course launch vehicle could potentially land on a coffee tree, macnut tree, or God forbid, South Point Pizza, Beer & Billiards.

You did notice that the article mentions only solar - they knew that any mention of geothermal would instantly doom the idea....
But, given that it is a new concept, it's already doomed for anywhere in Hawaii.
