It's so hot here in HPP that it took less than three minutes for the ice cubes to melt in my glass of water! This evening I may have to experiment with Coke and dark rumWinkpj

Pam, try crushed ice instead, just fill your glass with it and pour over the Rabi Mai Tai! Smile

Oh, John I like your way of thinking. On that note, does anybody know if it is possible to make Lychee wine? I've never made wine but hey, if it can be done in a college dorm, how hard can it be? Smile pj

Start with a whole lot of lychees. Then start a'peeling!!!!

That alone might be enough to get me to try something easier to prep, like papayas.... Smile

I'm not to sure about the peeling bit. We're in wine country and some wines made from grapes leave the skins on and the number of days the skins are left on the mash makes all types of variations in the wine. More peppery if left on a long time, more sweet if the mash is pulled right away.

So you go girl, great idea. Prefer wine to knats anyday! If you want I'll try to get a vintiner from UC Davis school of Vinticulture to cook up a recipe for ya!

Back to the original thread... I happen to be traveling in Northern California. Drove from Eureka to Chico via Hwy 299 today and got temps ranging from 76 at the coast to 113 degrees inland! I even saw the thermometer on the rental car spike to 120 degrees for a minute. I don't think those ice cubes would touch the bottom of the glass in solid form! Can't wait to get back to "chilly" Volcano!

You guys could come visit ME. It's 114 today and (altough it's a DRY heat hahahaha) it's like baking muffins when you open my front door. I swear that heat hits ya and I would give anything for a 80-90 degree day! The desert can be very unforgiving in the middle of July and yet it's so beautiful in a stark sorta way.

I've seen things here that I only saw at the Science museum as a kid in Buffalo, NY. There are creatures that live here in the desert that puzzle me - how the heck do they do it?! And the animals come down from the mountains looking for water...a couple years ago Tony was in our front yard and Chuy (small, 5lb applehead chihuahua) was barking at something Tony couldn't see and when he stood up a coyote lunged from behind our pickup and grabbed Chuy in his mouth! Tony was about 10 feet away and scared the coyote and he dropped Chuy. He punctured his hind quarters but any more of a grip and he coulda broke his little back. Our vet said he didn't know of a little dog that got away up to that point. Really, he wouldn't have if Tony wasn't right there to raise heck and startle the yote.

I realize the coyote needed food, but dang!

Anyway - we're soooo looking forward to this end of this last harsh summer for us here in Arizona. I'll do rain, I'll do humid...but the heat that can be 120 or more degrees is just unrelenting. That I can do WITHOUT.

Carrie,
That is so good that Tony was right there, reacted so quicklyand saved Dear Chuy!
I have a neighbor here in San Antonio that watched a coyote over her backyard fence take down a full size deer. After that I think I know where the dogs that were strays went. I tolkd the family with the real small kids about them, they still let the toddlers out alone sometimes, yikes! Maybe they were spares, the way the treat them. Or the strongest survives, I dunno. But they sure do take some big chances with them. Stick Buffo toads in their mouths, hang buy the excavation crew while putting in new sewer lines...

It's been real hot here, we even hit 100 in April of this year. Worst is when the humidity sets in, but that is not real often here. We are just praying for rain. In drought situation for a year and a half, but then when are we not in drought. We never get that much rain. Simetimes it makes Eden Roc look good just to be chillin' in some rain, comparatively speaking.....

When I get there will all have to sit around together, tell our stories and lament about the weather drinking our tropical smoothees with papaya, pineapple, mango, some of Claudia's strawberries or whatever in them.
I like to drink a lot of them made with my Vita-mix...in the evening, you just shake a little rum into them occasionally.

"Dammit man, the Doobie Brothers broke up! Shit! When did that happen?" Jack T. Colton from Romancing the Stone. This movie Kinda brings back my college days to me.....
Have to edit this... to Steely Dan and Michael McDonald are in town tomorrow night and we will be there! They performed such hits as Reeling in the years, My old school, Hey nineteen, Do it again, It keeps me runnin', What a fool believes, minute by minute etc.
