Domes ??
#1
I was wondering why we haven't seen more folks choose to build domes on the BI... We have done some research on dome building. Any comments?

I was a shop foreman for a dome manufacturer years ago and while they have a number of interesting attributes they also have some simple problems. 1) building triangles in a rectalinear world is not that efficient. 2) interior layouts are viewed as problems. 3) building officials are often unframiliar with them. 4) resale value is compromised by having a very small market segment which finds them desireable.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Rob is certainly right on with #4. These homes are considered "unconventional" and only a small segment of the buyers are interested in. Therefore, it's not easy to get financing for these kind of homes either.

Hi Hope,
Or is it Hi Hopes? I have a friend that is building a 50" dome, right now, here in TX. He says that there are a couple of them on the BI. Not my cup of tea. I think I'm more of a Yurt guy but he has been to several raisings and is well informed on the Dome culture. But as far I'm concerned as a Realtor and a certified home inspector, in Tx, I would have to agree with Robs' three points. Thankfully this is a web forum that I could diagree and not be edited out. If you want I can give you my friends email he's alway glad to talk domes.

Take care,
dave

Good Point John. The same friend got a construction loan. Man it was like pulling teeth. It was the appraisal that killed us. We finally found someone that would appraise it as a "custom home" and he was approved. I helped him find a lot and that took 6 months just because we have such tough HOAs' in this area. His raising is the first week in Aug. So, Hope, you are cordially invited to come and watch/help if you're into Domes.

Take care,
dave

Hey Lucy,

Thanks for the invite. Sounds like fun. May have to check it out. We're planning a trip over to the BI in the fall, so we may be conserving funds. LOL.. always cost me mega when I get close to that dang river walk. Do you already own property/home in Puna? Thanks again.

Take care,
dave

Dave and Lucy:

Thanks for the invite; Austin and San Antonio are both long hauls, so I'll have to pass. Plus I have a full schedule for awhile. I was hoping Dave's builder friend was here in the Metroplex.

Mahalos and alohas to all.
