New gut and switch HB1585 MK again, and worse
#81
"In a news release today, the TMT board said, "The TMT International Observatory Board of Governors at its meeting this week deferred a decision on whether to continue towards building the Thirty Telescope in Hawaii, or to consider the alternative in the Canary Islands."

I suspect much of this is due to the delay in the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to May 2020. The TMT wants to be operational while the JWST is still working - it has a ~10-year lifespan - so this has given the TMT construction decision a little more leeway.

rainyjim,

Based on the hearings and their findings of fact, I'm not convinced the <600 acres of the astronomy district (vs the balance of the 11k acre science reserve, the rest of Mauna Kea, or other sites around Hawaii) were ever "the most important and significant area culturally". I'd delve further into that but it'd be off-topic.

Thanks and aloha.

Kahele on Hawaii News Now early today:

1) When I hear Kahele say he's for the TMT, while submitting his gut and replace bill to prevent the observatory from being built - - it reminds me of the general in Vietnam who said we had to destroy the village to save it.
2) After watching the slow motion protests and hearings held over construction of the TMT the past few years, with emotional pleas that every i be dotted, every t crossed, and the need to take our time in getting it right & follow every rule, it's pretty disingenuous to hear Kahele now claim he had to use a procedural tool so he could move fast and get it right, quoting Martin Luther King's comment "the fierce urgency of now." So in this case we're in such a hurry we must gut every dotted i, and each crossed t? Or replace them when no one is looking, that's fine too? Really?
3) He claims he's doing what the public asked him to do, but can't be bothered with public hearings?

The entire interview was riddled with doublespeak.

"3) He claims he's doing what the public asked him to do, but can't be bothered with public hearings?"

This is what pisses me off more than anything else. His original HB 3090 bill was met with almost complete public disapproval, goes through gut-and-replace and re-appears as HB 1985. Then uses gut-and-replace to introduce a new bill, HB 1585, with no possibility of public testimony, and tells us it's what the public asked him to do?

Fortunately, the House knows what he's up to, but the conference committee stage still worries me, because the public has no say over what happens there and we could end up with a law that is not only deeply unpopular but bypasses democracy - and Kahele has no problem with that.

"deeply unpopular" "Bypasses Democracy" In your opinion of course right TOMK ?

Speak for yourself please and let others decide they own. "Others" = silent majority, that some people like to ignore / pretend do not exist.

just sayin'

The Others certainly exist.
On this topic however, what is pretended is that the Others are silent, and that they're a majority. If you read the reports and polls you'll find they're neither:

75%+ in Hawaii are in favor of building the TMT
90% are against Kahele's land use proposals for Mauna Kea
Kahele received 0% of his constituents vote in order to represent them

And the current version of HB 1585 had no opportunity for public testimony, so someone claiming there is a majority in support of the bill is clearly just making things up.
