Animal Quarantine Process - Questions
#1
Okay...I'm fairly bright but this form to accompany my payment of 165.00; 2 consecutive rabies certificates; original Titre Serum Level from KSU...is very frustrating.

I assume they want me to fill it out (per an email from the Dept of Ag) so that just in case Chuy ends up in quarantine, they have this info. Okay. But do I actually have to contact Bar-King Dog Kennel and register with them and get a CODE to put on the form? Any Punatics who are familiar with this form AQS 278?

OH YEAH - And where do you get the color codes and breed codes?

Hi Carrie

When we moved our little buddy in April on the Three Day Or Less program, we picked him up directly at the Honolulu Quarantine Station. Since it was a direct airport release, The approved animal hospital information or breed code was not required. The whole process at the airport took less than an hour; pretty painless. He then accompanied us on the flight to Hilo.

If you have to use Bar-King Dog Kennel, I think you will find that they are pretty nice folks and have a clean and friendly operation. We plan on using them when we go to the Mainland in October. Their number is 966-8733.

Aloha,

Bill

Thanks Bill. I told them that our dog would be for immediate release, and I have everything they want, so I just don't understand why they are wanting me to fill out this form...he's not gonna be in quarantine anywhere.

I just enclosed the two original rabies certificates; Rabies Serum results from KSU; copy of his Microchip Certificate and a check for $165.00. That oughta do it. I will send it all return-receipt "just in case."

Hi again Carrie,

We did fill out the form, although most of it was left blank since it did't apply. We just did not want to take any chances whatsoever. I did contact the Quarantine Center a couple of times with questions, and they were very understanding and helpful. It really went smooth, and all of our worry was for nothing.

Aloha Bill. I just came back from the Post Office...all went out - but since the website states we don't have to do the form 278 because Chuy will be in the immediate release program, we didn't send that in. If there's a problem with that, I do have one filled-out in case they want it on the date of travel. I'm glad to hear that it went so well with your pet. I think the pet owners stress more than the pet. I keep thinking "what'll happen if they have to hold him?" -- Not Gonna Happen. All is in order. LOL!!!

Thanks for your reassurance!

Carrie.

You may want to call the quarantine station in a few days to make sure they received your paperwork and to check that its all in order.
I did this when we came over in May and it really put my mind at ease.

Good luck.

Hi Robin. Just got off the phone with them. Now it seems I should have sent in the Dog & Cat Import form and did not. So - they told me to get it notarized and just bring it with when we make the trip over with Chuy. All should be okay. You can't send it separate from the other stuff 'cause they can't guarantee it won't get lost. I swear, if this whole process doesn't get the better of me...I just want it to be over.

Hi, Carrie.

It will be fine.
Just keep repeating that...It will be fine.

I think everyone feels the same. I was a nervous wreck. My dog and cat did great. Hot, a bit stressed, but totally okay.

Our 2 cats and 2 Boxers just celebrated 1 year in Hawaii. Somehow, I don't think they remember the paperwork, the trip, or the fact they weren't always living in Paradise. Smile

Hey Carrie,
I feel for 'ya girl. Been there, done that and have a few grey *he-hum*, I mean "adult blonde" hairs as a result. Just like in the airline biz CYA! Duplicates of everything! In the plastic pouch on the kennel I would have copies of everything under the sun so that they (the powers that be) will have everything in one convenient place, heck, maybe even include an extra notorized copy of the Dog and Cat Import form. Can't hurt that's for sure! Be sure and write Chuy's name in Magic Marker on the outside of the kennel, sometimes if the animals just hear their name it is comforting and my experience is most of the rampers are animal friendly and will try their best to put the animal at ease with their voice. Also, and this is a goody, especially now after what just almost happened out of LGW allow more time than you think you will need to clear the animal and give it enough time to do it's business OUTSIDE of the kennel! Because my trans Pacific flt was late landing in HNL all I had time to do was grab a smartcart and run to get my dog and then run to the interisland terminal! Poor baby had to hold it for almost 12 hours!! It is a nerve frazzling experience and my feeble words can not express the elation you will feel when your interisland flight takes off bound for ITO, nothing like coming HOME to Hawaii, especially with furr babies in tow!Smile
Hang in there! You're on the downhill side of this journey!
A hui hou!
PJ
