Don't roast marshmallows over lava

As usual, the USGS has been excellent in keeping everyone up to date:

Not being a chemist though, what exactly does happen if you add sugar to sulfuric acid?

Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents?

Excellent question, Jay Furr of Richmond, Vermont.
I would only add to the USGS reply, "This ain't the mainland, Jay. Most of us here on Big Island, judging by a recent Punaweb thread, would roast various flavors of Spam.""

Tom, it’s worth a Google. I did and it’s somewhat interesting.

Right. It doesn't look very appetizing.

In my experience toasting marshmallows over lava, they tend to burst into flames before melting all the way through, so I was a little disappointed. Especially after having carried sticks all the way out there. It was easy to do on the slow pahoehoe flows on the coastal flats from Puu Oo. Around fountaining vents, not so much.

"Around fountaining vents, not so much."

I agree, you would need some very long sticks.
