Books You Read...
#21
Just finish reading Island of the Sequined Love Nun...what a funny book! I like Chris Moore's style - it's a real escape from reality! Seems rare to read something that makes me laugh out loud the whole way through.

Next on the list is The Island Snatchers - by Janice Kay Johnson. I'm gonna look for Pi...sounds so interesting.

AkoniV,
Most of the 8th graders enjoy the survival aspect of the story (my mountain kids had mostly all been to the ocean at some point but had a hard time visualizing the vastness.) Pi is nothing if not clever! They get pretty polarized over the multiple religions- some think it's cool and others are apalled- how can you practice/commit to more than one? This generated some great discussion. As for the events at the end, we talked a lot about what actually happened out there in the ocean.

Lots of fun for a math teacher who usually doesn't get to talk about books! But my old school had a period where we all did reading. We'll see what my new school has, soon!

Life of Pi sounds interesting for my son. Does it end well? He got so upset with the last to Harry Potter's (as did a lot of readers posting on HP forums).

Some of my Hawaii based favorites:

Keola Beamer's collection of short stories,The Shimmering. Great collection of chicken skin and humorous stories. The slack key vituoso is quite a story teller.

Chicken Soup for the Hawaii Soul (I got to meet Mark Victor Hansen when he spoke at Unity in Diamond Head..wonderful man).

One of my highschool students there introduced me to wonderful book that I can't quite call the name of The Dove, I think. True story about a teen who sails the South Pacific with only his cat for company.

MSurf, Forgot to reply. Yes, we (my teen son and I) read the Way of the Peaceful Warrior's sequel set on Moloakai. I really liked it. He liked the original better.
Speaking of spiritual Hawaii books -
The Urban Shaman, the Hawaiian Way of the Adventurer by Serge Kahili King is an interesting and imo practical approach to self-help, planetary help and metaphysics -

I have read the Urban Shaman, too, and thought it was very interesting and powerful. I just bought and am in the middle of reading "Pronoia:The Antidote for Paranoia - How the Whole Word is Conspiring to Shower You With Blessings" by Rob Brezny. I wish I could afford to buy the book for everyone I know! I recommend it!

Cindy, The life of Pi is a great book about survival of mind and body and spirit. The ending is interesting and can be taken two ways, literally, or magically. You read it first I think you will enjoy it, the innocence and the humor, the observations were all so well done. Mella

"Dove" was indeed the title and the author is Robin Graham. He didn't just sail the South Pacific though. In 1970 he completed a solo voyage that circumnavigated the earth that he'd begun 5 years earlier at the age of 16.

AFAIK, he remains the youngest person ever to have achieved this feat of single-handed seamanship. He was inspired to undertake this effort after reading a book that is also one of my favorite adventure tales "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Capt. Joshua Slocum, the first - and for over 60 years - the oldest person to do so.

We got Kiana Davenport's latest book "House of many gods" when we were in the Kohala Book Store a couple of months ago. Just a great book. We really enjoyed the vivid descriptions she provides of Oahu and Kauai. We want to get her other book "Song of Exile" as well.

Just finshed "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" and "Tears of the Giraffe" Alexander Mccall Smith set in Botswana with Precious Ramotswe. Highly recommend. Full of love for the land, gentleness and good feeling towards other. Will give you a nice peaceful glow.
