Time to begin discussing Puna lava viewing site
#51
text from story posted by HOTPE:

Gov. Ige's increases the penalty for people caught in closed east rift zone areas. Those caught and cited by DLNR officials can be fined up to $5,000 and given up to a year of jail time...."I find there is a need to strengthen the enforcement tools available to county and state emergency management officials in controlling public access to dangerous areas....” said Gov. Ige in a statement.

The Governor is right. And why go halfway here? Let's boost the prison term to 2 years for these sorts of offenses.

And five criminals recently caught were from California.

We can't continue to allow tourists to so abuse and trample our laws and way of life. Make these California criminals a top prosecution priority for stiff sentencing. That will send out the proper message.

Yes, it will send out the proper message. Which is as follows, This is a Natural Disaster, a bonafide tragedy, not Polynesian Disneyland.

If you must watch lava ravage an island paradise, the new Jurassic Park movie is coming out soon!

"In the past 10 days, about a dozen people have been cited for loitering in lava zones, some of whom are eligible to be disciplined under new guidelines established by Gov. David Ige earlier this month. Of those cited, four were in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Lava Tree State Park, three at Paakili, and several others in the Mackenzie State Recreation Area."

Must be incorrect!!!

It was. Good job reni, HNN already corrected the story. On a Sunday night when it’s generally the backup crew, that’s impressively responsive.

From glinda: "what would be the drawbacks of encouraging county/state to open up a viewing area at the flow’s edge at the end of Red Road?..."

Good contribution, glinda. A thoughtful and convincing appeal. Unfortunately the critics to lava viewing (from the ground) are persistent and likely to influence officials mulling a lava viewing site. Opinions saying let's not do this generally go far in Hawaii County.

Leo posted this clip of the lava river 2 days ago in the Photos thread. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQAxaQVpxtY

An extraordinary sight, close in majesty to seeing a solar eclipse.

Yet a poster above equates this as a "Polynesian Disneyland," implying vacuous tourists bumbling around looking for cheap entertainment. Another poster is convinced that lava viewers will want to tour the disaster center to see the evacuees.

Another poster in the CoH Civil Defense thread wrote: "This is a massive and unprecedented disaster...(if this happened in California), ...entire populous within a 20 mile radius would pack up....(our failure to do the same should be) regarded as absolutely insane..."

Vacuous criticism and a distraught commentator engaged in major fear mongering. Their wisdom might rule the day.

It is rumored that the police are taking family and friends in to visit the lava flows... (Under other circumstances, I would normally dismiss such rumors, but, given that this is Hawaii - where special people get special privileges - I'm less inclined to do so.)

Apparently the original poster missed the intended sarcasm

There is now a large contingent of don't set up a lava-viewing site commentators. If you are NOT one of them I am gratified to hear that.

Thanks to this thread I am a staunch anti-viewing area person.

Missed again. I'm not for promoting tourism during disasters.
