Or possibly unsafe because there are only three or four patrol officers on duty at a time in Puna District.
---------------
This has not been true since the event began. It is more like 15-20. I am just basing that on the number of officers I see, as I drive around Pahoa daily. It is normal now to see 3-5 police cars in 10 minutes or less.

Somewhere along the line we ought to get some science expertise on the relative levels of S02 at different eruption features. We know fumes are very problematic by ocean entries (laze).
How about near Fissure 8? (Aren't there people living with 1.5-2 miles of Fissure 8?)
How about 3 miles from Fissure 8 at mid-river? (we've seen a clip 30 yards from the river) How about some distance from the river, as the link shows?
Obviously there is fume overlap anywhere in the eruption zone depending on wind, but can one plot out safer zones?
ETA: Just read about the boat accident--that will certainly push views in the safety direction....

You must be driving around in the Hood, man.

narrowed a possible viewing area down to a few sites. The mayor said that all safety measures need to be considered before a lava viewing area can be approved on land and require approval from the Hawaii Department of Health and U.S. Geological Survey.

HOTPE - Anybody ask someone from Puna? - True DAT!
Although it may bring tourist dollars, in talking with people I know from Lower Puna (including a few business owners) I don't personally know anyone who supports this.
The eruption is still very volatile and could change at any minute and there are so many people there who are now homeless or can't live in their homes because of the gas. It's pretty crappy to foist this upon them at this time for a few greedy people to make money.

Viewing the lava from land is definitely too dangerous. Everyone should be required to take a boat or helicopter at $250/visit.
