various volcanic related water tank issues

This morning I was checking my cistern. I have since removed all the precautions for ash and Pele's hair, reconnecting everything.

I climbed the ladder, uncovered the tarp mesh and poked my head under as I was about to add a splash of bleach and a quarther box of baking soda to neutralize the PH because I suspect my water is still a bit acidic due to SO2.

Then I noticed my overflow wasn't working because the water level was too high. (The earthquakes made the overflow lose it's prime)

Many days now I have been working in the yard on a sunny day with no rain. Then all of a sudden I notice my overflow going, -but not steady. It sprays out in spurts because of the sloshing water. I say to myself, "there was another earthquake I didn't feel".

So anyways this morning as I was submerging the device and twisting to fill with water and remove all air bubbles, I had forgotten that the apparatus had two pieces. The twisty part and the long part that sticks out. While submerging, they fell apart. I got the long part but the twisty part fell to the bottom of my 8 foot tall 7,500 gallon tank.

I cannot think of any other way to get it except going for a swim. Guess I'll wait for the sun to come up a bit and get hot.

Any ideas?

Fish it out with a 10' conduit pipe. Bend a hook into the end if needed. Or you could just leave it in there and get a new one.

Yes! That is it! I like all those ideas but fruit picking tool is something I have handy. Going to give it a try.

If not, and I have to jump in for a swim, I'm thinking of throwing a pool party.
And after when the piece is fished out and time for refreshments, I could serve fresh fruit salad direct from my trees and gardens. I got strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries now. Of course they would be meticulously washed with my new PH adjusted cistern water.

Lucky you on the blueberries, my plant just puts out leaves which don’t taste very good....

It's the emerald variety blueberry I got at Home Depot. Supposed to produce better in warm weather climates.



I ran into a snag. (didn't snag the liner which I was concerned about)

I cannot see it and pick it up now as he liner is white and so is the PVC overflow device and the water isn't as clear as I would like it. Also I recently got rid of my snorkel mask because it wasn't fitting right and have not since replaced it.

Looking to borrow a mask or goggles from neighbors to be able to use my fruit picker to retrieve it.

EW - where do you live? I live in HPP and had to have my water tank moved to stable ground and a new liner installed because the May 4th earthquake opened up the rocks on one side of my tank []

Hey Sue. I'm in Hawaiian Acres. I wound up having to go for a swim after all. Tips appreciated though. Swim felt nice today as it's hot and muggy. I stayed a bit longer than necessary and wished I had a pool.

"The water isn't as clear as I would like it."

The water should be crystal clear with unobstructed view to the bottom. Is it algae? Maybe it's time to replace shade cloth if that's what you use.
