Kikala-Keokea Homesteads --anyone know about this place? I understand it is far from Hilo. Commutable? Scary criminals? Any beaches at all close by? Close to Pahoa?

This must be the area along Red Road (137) just East of Kalapna. We just got back from visiting our lots in Kehena Beach, and saw the clearing going on there. I think this area was cleared maybe 12 years ago, but there seems to me new work ramping up. From what I could tell, nothing there yet exceopt for a few freshly paved roads and some heavy earth moving machinery.

About 45 minutes from Hilo town with no traffic, Kehena Beach is about 2 miles away from the area you are talking about - and Pahoa is maybe 20 minutes.

Looks like this http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/articl...30341.html may answer your questions as well as mine.

There are several different area to Kikala-Keokea. The part that this article refers to is a Hawaiian Homelands project (you can see the roads going off to the left as you drive from Kalapana to Kehena).

There's also Kikala-Keokea Houselots right at the intersection of Kalapana and Red Road.

There's two additional sections of what's called Kikala-Keokea Homesteads -- one of them (behind the noni farm) has some possible access issues. So the question of "what's Kikala-Keokea Homesteads like?" is not a simple one.

Last year I bought a flag lot with road frontage in Ohia Estates. It's near the front giving it more highway noise but an easier walk to the village. I hope to build a cottage within the next year. Any thoughts on that area??

Ah... Ohia Estates! Since that's definitely one of my 'maybe' developments, I'm eager to learn what those in the know have to say!

Not an official explanation but is my understanding:

A subdivision which is divided up in such a way that some properties are behind others without street frontage except for property the width of a driveway, the flag pole. You will drive down the street and see only the front lots. All you will see of the flag lots is the driveway. In my case, the division was such that a very few of the flag lots actually ended up with street frontage. I have frontage on one street and the flagpole(driveway) fronts another. Other propertys on that street have frontage and the flagpole goes between two of them. It's not just deeded access, it's the actual shape of the lot.

Ohia Estates is not as nice as Royal Hawaiian Estates...yet. It seems that there are more nice homes being built and renovation of some of the older homes. Like many areas here, it seems to be getting nicer.

I think you got your subdivions mixed up. Ohia is clearly not high rent but it looks better than Royal Hawaiian, which does have nice roads in the front section. I believe you are thinking of Mauna Loa Estates which abuts Ohia and is a step up from Ohia.
