Hurricane Lane and civil defense
#1
From CBS News:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/lif...ii-n903016

"In February, the Hawaii National Guard reported that the state has too few hurricane evacuation shelters and that those it does have "are in need of retro-fitting and improvement."

The report calculated that there are only 277,376 shelter spaces for the state's 1.4 million residents.

"Hurricane evacuation shelters are a last resort option for residents and visitors who do not have a safer place to stay," it said. "There are insufficient hurricane evacuation shelters to meet the estimated demand of the population and these shelters have no supplies."

So makes one wonder just what the state and county are prepared for...
besides raising taxes

I remember when the DOE was building the new gym at Pahoa H.S. and I asked if the structure was designed to double as an emergency shelter. No, I was told. No one thought of that.

That gym only cost $8 million. You'd think they could squeeze a little seismic or wind load capability out of a budget like that. But that takes thought.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Not expensive enough. Better if the retrofit is a separate project.

Gotta love that CD! From the latest email:

Numerous major and secondary roads are closed.

No details whatsoever about which roads.

Of course, you are right. And “numerous”!

They should just keep it simple and say “da kine” as the entirety of the next bulletin...
