Introduce yourself
Hey James that’s been the long way back to the BI and I bet a very interesting journey. Mine is not so much of a journey, living in the same area all my life (except for a short stay in havasu, Arizona) none the less to Hawaii is where our hearts belong.
Isa, thanks for the heads up it sounds like a bar is a bar no matter what zip your in.

Well well welcome and aloha to the newbies, wantabees and weatherbees!

Calen and Kelly, James and Elizabeth. This neighborhood welcomes you to ask what you need, tell what you've learned, share what you think and hopefully one day in the not to distant future there will be Punatic Party #3 where you can meet who you greet!

Best of luck on your new adventures. Mella

PS. If Carrie hadn't had an open house in Arizona today I'm sure she would have eloquently wished you a grand welcome. She'll catch up I'm trusting!

aloha all,

been checkin this site regularly so thought i'd finally say "howzit." nice site, nice users, lots of aloha. at any rate, i'm stuck on the lameland for another 10 years or so. luckily, we live in what has to be the LAST great spot in california, the central california coast. so its not too bad. lots of cows, slow pace, open space, and empty beaches! my wife of 10 years, 8 year old daughter and i live in a small "old school" beach town called los osos. we got the hawai'i bug about 7 years ago. since then i have tried greatly to "live with aloha," and keep my mind on the aina until i am there. i read about hawai'ian history, the language and it's people as much as possible. my first undertaking when i'm there, will be to learn the language. there is so much to learn and know in hawai'i, based solely on the names and meanings of places, things, etc. we have been blessed with great friends and family on oahu, maui (our best friends), moloka'i (our homesteader friends!) and the big island. we purchased some land in HPP 2 years ago, in the hopes of moving there in the next 10 years. if anything, hawai'i has definitely taught me to be patient. being fellow lovers of hawai'i, i think you will enjoy my fine art. i paint nothing but hawai'i. palms, beaches, flowers, surfers and people. it keeps me there. check out my stuff at www.holahangallery.com i think you'll enjoy it. just wanted to say "aloha" and enjoy your warm days (and nights) in hawai'i, the smell of the flowers, the fruit, the food, and of course, the people.

aloha!

Aloha Brad. I am humbled. Your work is amazing. I paint as well. When it's Hawaii I find I am driven to do it somehow moreso. So glad you are a part of the forum and feel free to ask questions or help out a neighbor in the making...Malama Pono.

Aloha all,
Its Calen again just looking in on what’s going on and noticed Brads art (very inspiring) don’t you think? Also noticed Carrie who mella l referred to in my last message and just wanted to say hello to all. Also we are very excited because we are meeting with our lawyer next week to start the sale of our business (hopefully) we have just got our micro chip and rabies test for our dog Coco so we will be finishing the last few things to be completed on our house here in ca. and put it up for sale, so as of today we are counting down 4 months and 1 week. We will keep you all posted. And by the way I have owned my termite company for ten years and will be bringing a lot of tools, truck, experience and aloha spirit to the island if any body out there can use my help I will need work give me a try and you will find out I am a nice person with a great moral compass.

Calen, Kelly and coco.

Hey HPPwanabe/Cale/Kelly!

I bartendered for several years in Florida, and thought about getting similar work here. Nope. Tips and business here aren't great, though many newer bars are opening in Hilo.

There is an attempt at getting a "scene" going. The re-opening of Kaikoda in downtown Hilo, and the opening of Nichol's are both harbringers of the changes. I guess several other new bars have opened too, to less fanfare. Most bars here are what i classify as bad dives. I.E. no personality, bad clientele, bad service, mediocer prices. We'll see what happens though.

Nichol's (an irish pub) opened to a huge amount of success though was scheduled to be shut down. They have since been allowed to stay open at curtailed hours. The college kids and frankly a whole lot of 40-somethings went nuts for the place which exuded previously unseen personality, at least by BI standards. The local community in Hilo was unnerved by the vivaciousness of drunken revellers after midnight. So a bunch of fuddy-duddies petitioned to revoke their license. Note that Nichols was delinquent in commonly over-serving its clients.

Not many people go for a commercial night life here. You might google nichol's public house + hilo to find the owner's name, she plans on opening another place soon, maybe in Pahoa, she seems a good sort. Good luck!

BTW: YOU won't have any problems staying busy, might want to check on chemical/vikane sources though. Things can be kinda' old west-like out here.

BBTW: Just tell Kelly she can retire when she gets here, you'll be the breadwinner. Most people feel like giving up the whole work thing upon first landing anyway. Tell her she's been promoted to Island Queen/Private Cocktaliere, i'm sure she'll manage to adapt Wink

Thanks for the info Hazen, I am not going to tell her the retire as the island queen part but she has become a pretty good Gardner so I guess I could be the breadwinner and she could be the fruit gather.

Aloha All,

My name is Jim, I presently reside in Alaska but my heart is and has been on the BI since my first visit some 6 years ago.

I am a new lurker to this site, and from what I have seen so far there is a wealth of good information and an endless number of really good people.

I am a carpenter by trade, and am planning my move as soon as my custom log home sells, hopefully before winter sets in. Smile

mahalo for the site

Welcome to our new resident artist Brad and family! Hey we could get an artist retreat going kinda like the dive club, photo club. I like the sound of artist retreat, say in Waipio Valley with tents, hog jerky a few art supplies and go for it. Or not just the virtual gallery we have here from all the talented members.

Harty har har and welcome to Jim the Alaskan lurker, carpenter. Need a carpenter, make nice! LOL It will take a while to catch up, but ask what you need and tell us about Kodiak Island!! Aloha All, Mella
