From the link:

How does THAT explain THIS: Just in case you were blowing off the tin-foil-hat views of the observatory closure, we note that all these solar/space cams down at the same time: ...Webcam from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope observatory in Hawaii

How hard is it to check if the webcam is working? Hint - not hard. It’s working:

The word at another site indicated that a lot of them were down. I had no way of getting any more info. Thought this would be as good a place as any to find out.
No need to get snippy, sir. Thanks for the info.Sorry to have bothered you.

It took me less than a minute to check whether the CFHT webcam was up & running. Less time than it takes to to read the headline & break out the tinfoil.

It's a nutty conspiracy site, no need to be concerned. For instance, it says:

"Can you explain why every single observatory like this in the entire world are shut down. Why is the office of energy management involved? What does this place actually do. Why do they need a mercury vortex engine to power the array, how does harp, smash, and hammer involved, how does hurricane flow tie into this. What was spotted above the array before they shut it down?"

All nonsense.

The Sunspot Solar Observatory on the mainland was closed down due to some security issue, but other observatories around the world, including those on Mauna Kea, remain open.

If this were the only story from quasi-psuedo-science web sites, it wouldn't be a problem. But as you pointed out, many people feel they have no way to get more information - - and they believe what they read if they can't find anything to disprove it.

The first thing you can do when reading a story like this (and by the way, I received an almost identical story from another, different site in my inbox this morning) is to find some detail they mentioned, and see if you can confirm it. In this case, you know how to cut & paste the link for the website, so cut and past one of the Hawaii observatories they listed in the article into Google, add 'webcam', and it will direct you straight to the page of four functioning webcams. That should be a red flag, and make you question the accuracy of the story.

The worst part isn't the nonsense in the story, it's what will happen as it propagates around the internet. For instance, we'll soon have word about the TMT. If it's approved, there's a good chance that "The Protectors" will get the band back together, and people who can't be bothered with a simple Google search, will load into planes and big trucks, put $100 worth of gas in their tanks and hit Saddle Road for a drive up the mountain to take in some illegal parking, camping and rock rolling. In between events, the conversation will no doubt rehash all of the "illegal" stuff the TMT allegedly does, now with this new one:

"... and did you hear, the FBI is after the observatories."
"What!!!"
"Oh yeah, brah, the FBI came in and shut observatories down, for a week, all over the country, INCLUDING MAUNA KEA!!!"
"What did they do?"
"Nevah said, top secret stuff, I always know those telescopes was up to no good. It's even worse than we thought. And for sure the TMT is in on that crap too."

I know an even simpler approach:

The link contains the word "paranormal". Don't even bother clicking.

Remember u not even knowing a road less than a mile from u is paved ?
