New, Improved Pohoiki?
#1
I am stoked that the County intends on reopening Pohoiki (Isaac Hale Beach Park). My wife and I surfed and socialized there several times a week for years. Some thoughts: Will water and toilets be available? Will the County move the lifeguard tower (now that it is not a harbor) south to protect First and Second Bay? I hope there is parking to accommodate the pent-up masses. Many are waiting, surfers, fishermen, families, visitors....The road will have to be 2 lanes wide. Emergency vehicles must have access.

It will happen but don't hold your breath or start complaining that it's taking so long.

There will be no water for some time to come because the water line that comes down Pohoiki road was compromised in several places.

The lifeguard stand was buried under lava.

There is plenty of parking near the non functioning restrooms.

There is no surf break at this time.

It's my understanding historically most black sand beaches are short lived, the sand washes back out into the ocean. I sure hope the new beach there doesn't get dredged for boats so all can enjoy the fabulous new gift from nature. It may return to a boat launch on it's own time.

Actually there is 1 surf break. The right hander on the other side of the bay. Seen video of surfers on it already. Its not for beginners. Or at least it wasn't before. Had to kick out before the inside wash took you into the rocks and urchins. Its sad that the best breaks were taken.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

I believe dredging black sand to create a channel for one group (boaters) over another (swimmers, surfers) would come under the category of Diverting The Lava, wouldn't it? Perhaps some "Friends" of "The Protectors" might wish to weigh in on the actions of Pele, and whether dredging is an allowable and permissible counter measure?

On Tuesday night, 9/18/2018 Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono had another message for the Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee “Just shut up and step up. Do the right thing.” She added in another related comment, “Bull$hit.”

"There is no surf break at this time."

Almost all waves are rideable, even "1-foot slop."

Pohoiki had three distinct breaks before; the small right near the boat entrance is covered by sand, but the other 2 remain, though their quality has been affected. (I heard one surfer assert the left in front of the jetty is better.)

East Hawaii Island surfers will ride whatever they can get, and are well known for riding in dangerous and poor conditions. And some breaks don't even appear until the surf is 8 feet; a complete judgment cannot be passed on a surf site until all conditions have been observed.

Third bay footage from 2015 (just past Pohoiki Bay) once again. Dangerous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc1NnZ1z1sM

Actually, I believe it would come under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 (CZMA)...

In other words if the local guys touch it they have to answer to the big boys... though in the current political climate in which even the president is a buffoon who can tell what will happen?

I saw a video Of the Left. 'Elevators' It was always a wave that welled up big at the point but always flattened out, in deep water before the inside break ,unless it was really big. If that has a sand shelf now it could be pretty good.

That's what I heard about that wave.

Meanwhile, I'm curious if some users think the sand should stay in place (and boat ramp closed) to preserve the new pond. Swimming in the boat ramp before when boats were entering/leaving was tricky and technically illegal.

A poster on another thread suggested poor water quality; he cited dead fish already. With no channel to the ocean, maybe the water quality situation in the pond is hopeless. (I suppose there is some minor seepage through the sand.)

For the time being, the pond is the only safe swimming for a long ways around.
