E komo mai to Jim R, good to see more Alaskans moving to paradise.
I have to point out that, when I moved there in 1970, the people of Alaska shared that sense of what Hawaiians call Aloha. I was struck by the friendliness and camaraderie I experienced when walking down the streets of Anchorage. I got drafted, left the state for four years, and when I got back all that warmth was gone and people were conspicuously distrustful. What a shame. If I have anything to do with it, Hawaii will never lose Aloha.
A hui hou,

Hi!
My name's Susan and my husband's is Phil. My parents bought a house in HPP back in the 80's, living there for a good 20 years. My uncle and his family were there since the 60's and he just recently returned here to Oregon. Anyway, lots of memories from over there, and now having sold the house, I have kept an inherited acre in HPP, and am starting to look around at the best options for moving over there. I just found this site last week, and am overwhelmed by the amount of information! I came looking only for advice on getting my doggie over there safely Anyway, mostly, we are not of the same type of income bracket as my parents were, so like many of you are looking to see if we can pull it off. Been all over the board, it was heartening to hear Emily's story & pics of the container home (while they are building) and are trying to decide if we can get away with that in HPP. There is no definate yes or no from anyone, which though not unexpected, is also a bit worrisome in that do you invest a bunch of $ purchading &shipping the thing over there, only to find you have a neighbor who objects...also, we have a travel trailer, and have received mixed message on this option also! But, we will keep researching, and hopefully come to some conclusion on how to go about this. This board has been wonderful, and as I have visited many, this is the least "snarky" community I have ever seen...amazing really, everyone is just so helpful, and good sense of humor abounds. I knew it was possible! So, maybe now we have learned some, we will be able to ask some questions that haven't already been covered over and over (eh, probably not, but you never know) Mainly now just trying to make up lists of prices for the various options, because it can sure be suprising how "hidden", or just "I was unaware of that" costs can add up for each option. The realtor we used for the house, of course suggests selling the land and just buying a pre-existing home. I think he assumes we have a bit of $$ And, with the way things are going, I'm not too sure that is wise either, not to mention the sentimental value of it being land that my Dad had picked out, I'd really like to build there instead, but, eh, we are still at the very flexible point on weighing things out. So, short story long, that's who we are and why we are here. Nice to meet you all, and thanks so much already for the wealth of information!

Aloha CocoaMoe, WELCOME! There are no canvas/awning shops on the East side of te island, and the 3 awning shops seem to be store front awnings. Could be because boat harbors are few here, not what you would expect on an island this size (mainly because it is almost impossible to build them through the lava). Hilo had the only large natural harborage on the island. Even so, Hilo dosen't have a huge amount of boats in harbor.....and it is almost impossible to get a slip. But you may want to inquire at on awnings at the Hilo Yacht Club, 77 Laehala, Hilo HI 96720 or call (808)935-8936.
We didn't ship alot of stuff, mainly because it was a time to change for us, so we used the US Postal Service, Cheap & got here eventually.
Harleys are big here - big rally here Labor Day weekend, bikes from all islands & mainland!
Aloha, Carey

Hi, I'm Leif. I know, everyone will want to pronounce my name leaf, but I like to have it pronounce life. And my wife's name is Joy. A bit corney, but that's us. We have two kids 20 and 17. We have spent a lot of time on Maui in the past 6 yrs. Owned a condo in Kihei so that is where we spent our summers for the last 6 yrs. I am so totally in love with the Hawaiian Islands. We bought a lot site unseen in Hawaiian Parks 18 months ago. I just knew that any lot close to the ocean (and in Hawaii) was not going to be a bad thing. I can't wait until we finally get over to the BI to see it. We plan to build a home there in 2 or 3 yrs. Got to get the kids through University first. We live in Vancouver, Canada and are Canadian citizens. So, there lies the delema. We can only visit the great USA for no more than 180 days per calander year. We can't move there like most of you can. But, I can live with that for now. I will be more than greatful that I can spend 6 months out of every yr. in the Aloha State. This is the coolest website and forum. Reading all the posts is so much like almost being there.

Moss? Are you kidding, we're talking RUST here! Thanks for the welcome, Mella, much appreciated! We'll keep learning and probably make a reconnaisance mission to the big island, even though we have both spent quite a bit of time there, we never went with the intention of someday moving there, we probably need to revisualize the land so that we can make realistic plans that will no doubt be completely changed once we actually start the process

Welcome Leif and Joy! You will find an amazing array of helpful people and topics on punaweb, as you have already noticed. I have always thought that we should have more generous immigration/visitation policies for our Canadian friends and neighbors, especially those who choose to own property or businesses here. At any rate, 6 months a year in Hawaii is better than none.

Jerry

Thanks for your thoughts. One of your Senators from the south on the mainland has tried to get a bill through your House (not sure how that works) in government that would allow Canadians to stay in the US for up to 5 yrs at a time as long as we would not be a burden on your social system. eg. medical welfare and that sort of thing. Haven't heard anything about that for some time now. Probably died in some subcommitte. Who knows. One day we will all be of the same continent and common dollar (something like the Europeans) and be able to travel back and forth freely. I can only hope.
