Council Member Ruggles Town Hall on War Crimes
#11

And like events underway in Washington, many of us disapprove but are apparently powerless to do anything about it.

You mean the thread that hasn't had any activity for five days. I think I'll stick with my original comment. Nobody cares.

The people in power pass laws which protect themselves from repercussions by the general public. They are rarely held accountable. Like bankers. It’s a rare politician (or banker) who’s held accountable for their actions. And even then it’s not for screwing taxpayers, it’s for screwing an individual who they aren’t legally married to.

That thread has well over a hundred replies, it's been pretty active. And perhaps people have said want they want to say and since very little has changed, have not continued to post. I don't see how that counts as no-one caring.

Yes, over a hundred replies yet not one call for movement to the "Ethics" Committee from county council. I wonder why. Perhaps they are all too busy spending their $70,000 salaries

Are you saying PW members are also elected county council members?

Let's be clear - most people in Puna seem to be very upset about Ruggles' behavior, I'm one of them. But I still don't understand your claim that no-one cares because it's clear to me that many do. And, if you have read other threads, trying to get the ethics committee to actually be ethical is a lost cause. I agree it needs to go there but nothing will happen before Ruggles is out of the office anyway.

Perhaps some kind of legal action will happen regarding Ruggles after the November elections, I hope that happens, but have no expectation it will, and posting on PW won't help.

After the initial griping, I think people lose hope that the system is fair or can be changed.

There was hope?

Well, I'm a realist too, but I'm not going to let this go. It's like so many things here, oh we can't do anything about it, that's just the way it is. We can talk all we want but unless we push our elected officials to do something, nothing gets done. Yes, I realize the Ethics board is neither ethical or interested in truth, that was clear when two existing council members were brought before the board. But, there is just too much, see something, don't say anything. This has nothing to do with Aloha, but all to do about consequences and accountability. She is stealing from all of us.

Then file a complaint with the Ethics Commission. There is no filing fee. Ethically it doesn't matter if she is leaving office soon. The alleged ethics violation occurred while she is in office. I believe there is a six year statute of limitation.
Assume the best and ask questions.
