That land cleared is probably for papaya fields. It's not on the map for the proposed development.

Last I heard county was going to put in free sewers at the taxpayers expense. Shipman is poor and needs your help with their new subdivisions.

JRW,
Where did you get your information? Checking county records or driving by and drawing conclusions from a five second peek?

Probably from facebook. There's lots of false info on there mixed in with the truth.

Did anyone actually read the Shipman Village webpage?

The Keaʻau Community Planning Process (2006), made up of residents, community leaders, and W.H. Shipman Limited, defined Keaʻau Village as "A Place to Learn, Work, Rest and Play."
...

Economic growth will come through the promotion of diversified agriculture, encouraging tourism, the addition of new community and education facilities, and the protection of important environmental and cultural assets.

What "tourism" will come to visit the wonderful Keaau Village?

The only thing I see happening around here is the "protection" as a means of preventing growth.

The area off of Old Volcano Rd between Keaau Loop & the 7-11/76 station, that has just been cleared, was the first phase part of the W H Shipman 50-yr development plan, that they announced in July of 2006, as a townhouse type development... they cleared the fields soon after & leased them for planting (mainly banana/papaya)
The plantings have not been as maintained over the last couple of years (perhaps they were short farm leases that ran out?)
This area is not within the newest development proposal that was a part of the county $650-800K request for lava disaster recovery (which had ~1/3 for Keaau... something I questioned when it came out...)
Interesting to note, both of these areas are in flood wash areas... wonder what problems will be in store for the residents in the future...

ETA Kalakoa... the 50 year plan had a lot for tourism in Keaau, Kaloli Pt area..
There is a whole bunch of improvements that are in that plan for the W H Shipmean lands adjacent to HPP....
