Myopic vision of the universe --- has my support!!! Thanks HOTPE, DanD, TomK, Geochem and other science supporting members of Punaweb!
Thank you, lisa, your support for science hasn't gone unnoticed!
This sounds EXACTLY like an exchange between Donald Trump and one of his rabid followers.
As if to even point out some of the discrepancies between MK policy and the Hawaiian people's point of view is to be "anti-science"
You all have divorced yourself from science completely. 'Tis a shame, but hey with so much hate and intolerance now the norm you all fit right on in.

Let me see if I've correctly followed some of the previous comments:

If someone supports the TMT, the only explanation is that we must agree with Donald Trump, or act like one of his followers? How exactly?

Do the views of a minority of the Hawaiian people ever contain anti-science rhetoric when discussing Mauna Kea? If they do, are you saying they can say they're anti science, but we can't?

1) OK, let's see, so I'm divorced from science, which means you believe I no longer am married to, or support science? Is that what you're trying to say?
2) If I don't agree with changing the stewardship of Mauna Kea to an extremely restrictive access policy, one based on race alone, a policy that would make the mountain off limits for the 3/4's of the Hawaiian people who support astronomy there, I must be hateful and intolerant? If I believe in an inclusive policy for the mountain, for the greater good of everyone, I'm intolerant? Do tell.

What a bizarre conversation, this is 2018 not "One Million B.C." with Raquel Welch. Even then they probably dreamed of such opportunities, were humans ever in recorded history opposed to studying the stars? Welcome to politics of the Big Island, in a time warp with an unknown period of complete ignorance.

Only on Punaweb could you post a thank you for someone's post supporting local science and then be compared to Donald Trump for doing so. And then, bizarrely, be accused of being divorced from science.

PS. My apologies, lisa. A simple post supporting science has now been described as something from a rabid follower of Trump. I hope "Glinda" finds it in his heart to apologize to you. In the meantime, your support of science is appreciated. Now you have a taste of what science is up against.

We are born by the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. I'm just gonna come out and say it. The whole thing about how native Hawai'ians claim they have a right to the land based upon race, that is racist. That is racism. Their rights to their land does not stem from their race, it does not stem from being haole or not haole.
They do have a right legally, absolutely. People stole their land. Now, the problem is, the specific people protesting are probably not ali'i, and are assuming legal rights underneath a monarchical system they have no power in. In a monarchy, you need to be royalty to have a say in what gets constructed or not. I highly doubt the people blocking TMT are direct descendants of the royalty.
Also, I wonder how they would have handeled a bunch of natives blocking an important construction, back before Hawai'i was a state and it was still a monarchy. Somehow, I find it extremely difficult to believe they would be as gentle as we are today. I kinda have the feeling that back then, when Hawai'i was owned by Hawai'i, they would have just thrown every last one of those protestors in prison, immediately.

What is with all this "anti-science" stuff? Who is anti-science? How do we know they are?
Some folks here on PW sure like to brand others they don't agree with as anti-science. It is such a silly thing to do. It's just as silly as Trump droning on and on with his lock her up, or his fake news... Where on the national stage we have a petty tyrant telling us the news is an enemy of the people because they reflect how horrible he is, here we have our own petty tyrants that drone on and on about how anyone who might not support their position are anti-science. I can not see why we would give our local bullies any more respect than we would give the embarrassment that currently occupies the White House. Their words are certainly no closer to the truth than his, and are equally as embarrassing.
You know, I have it on very good authority that some folks actually eat green eggs and ham. Can you imagine? I personally would never touch such a thing. And besides I doubt they're kosher. And still, no matter, I do not brand those that do as anti-science. Would you?
But for real, where are these nefarious anti-sciers? Does anyone have links? Pics? Maps? I swear, if I ever see one... but OMG I will give them a piece of my mind when I do!

Would one comment suffice? If not, how many? I'll be glad to spend a few minutes on a Google search to answer your questions (above). However, if you'd like me to provide you with specific comments and links, you must also agree that you'll answer some questions I have for you, thoughtfully, with references and links which prove your claims. Agreed?

You are dead against the building of a telescope. A telescope! Determining one’s attitude towards science doesn’t get much easier than that.
