I understand how folks miss their recreation areas, but why is it the counties kuliana to fix it? perhaps a group of individuals to organize to mitigate the impact of individual defecators and litter bugs would be more effective than waiting for the County or Santa. Just sayin'

If you are talking about Pohoiki I would suggest that it is a county facility and the taxpayers of Puna pay for its maintenance.
Assume the best and ask questions.

"I understand how folks miss their recreation areas, but why is it the counties kuliana to fix it?"

It generally falls under Parks and Recreation -- an important function in any community. And invariably planned out relative to the size of the population. A community with few people needs few parks.

A fair sized population as we have in East Hawaii--Hilo and Puna total about 80,000 people--needs quite a few parks. And the natural environment is relevant: Oahu is ringed by beaches.

East Hawaii Island's coastal recreation opportunities are dismal--excluding shoreline fishing. The County has long been averse to making improvements, such as new ocean rock pools

Such a creating adult swimming at Onekahakaha Park in Hilo. So instead of having 2 primary swim sites in Hilo, Richardsons and 4 miles, we would have three. So now all sorts of people are trying to access Pohoiki. No surprise there.

Bring in porta potties by helicopter. 2 or 3. Drop them in the parking lot. It can be done on one day. Monitor their use, figure out hold long they last, and in X number of days take them out and bring in 3 more.

It's not brain surgery, but as usual something like this requires months of debate by bureaucrats and environmentalists and other obstructionists. Stupid.

I guess when people start reporting human waste at Pohoiki and the Tribune Herald reports on it, officials will take action. But isn't the road under construction going to make it there within a few weeks? They can truck the porta potties in.

Hi mark, word was from mayors office, road will be only 1 mile. Not the 2 it will take to get there. From what ive seen lately, the mayor will wait till his hands have been forced
By constituents or the public HARD.

There was a hmm , from donna at the mayors office when i said they would be resposible for the fecal health outbreak and the liability suits filed by the plaintiffs affected by the fecal contamination.

I reccomended she place that info in Mr kims lap asap. I applaud that she, as only a part time person can help put forth the publics aggenda to our Mayor.

Please keep up the pressure on all reps,I thank u

Don't be silly, Kim will merely declare another disaster area and prohibit people from entering (or crapping).

The covered courts are just now ready to open, & t may take 13mos to re-open all of the Pahoa Facility
Side notes- seemed it took less time to build than to repair... interesting that the reports all state that there was damage...
I was at the covered costs many times & did not notice all of the damage....
more interesting, they had people living there, yet it will take 13 mos to make the facility safe....
