Tree service workers casing property?
#1
Ok, perhaps I'm paranoid, but it sure was suspicious....

This morning, while at work in my home office, I go out to see what my dogs are barking at. It is a Big Island Tree Service truck and workers, along with Jan Security (doing lane closures while they worked) appear to be cutting trees that stand a chance of interfering with power lines across the road. I can only assume they're hired by the utility company for this purpose. They certainly were working like they wanted to bill lots of hours for little work.

I'm in Eden rock, quite a way back on one lane paved private roads. The truck with the boom bucket lift shows up first, towing a chipper, parks at the corner., since my time is flexible I decide I can do some yard work and keep my dogs from going too nuts at the fence, so I work and watch. 15 or so minutes later a Jan Security pickup stops by, they chat, and then goes down the road a bit, and a few minutes later goes racing back up the road at truly unsafe speeds. After another pause, the tree truck moves down the road 1/4 block, and stops and again parks engine off. Security pickup returns, they smoke their vape sticks for 10 min or so, then the tree service truck backs into position directly across from my property sets his braces and gets the bucket down to ground level, and security sets up behind to divert traffic.

Another 20 min of sooting the ****, and one worker finally takes the bucket into the air. Here's where it gets really suspicious. He spends 3-4 minutes way higher than he's going to work, looking out over the trees into my property. The power lines, and trees he's going to be cutting are behind him, as are his trimming tools (behind him in the lift). There's no way he was doing anything work related.

Anyway, then he turns around, and moves the boom/bucket into position, spends 5 minutes cutting a few trees to about 2 feet below the low voltage part of the lines, puts his bucket in a safe position, then they move a block or two down the road.

Call me paranoid, like I said, but WTH was he doing examining my property - it does take a lift or such to see over the trees on my side of the road, but he wasn't looking at anything along the road. I watched the whole time, and it made me feel uncomfortable. Was going to go out and ask if he was casing the joint, but he never came to the ground and they were down the road by the time I got outside the fence after his actual work anyway. Have to wonder if there's a side line in information on private property. At least, since I work from home, and my wife doesn't work, there's almost always someone here, along with the dogs.

Just sharing my observation, curious if anyone else has observed anything similar.

Yes, you are a little paranoid. What could he see that can't be seen with Google Maps? Maybe he was just enjoying the view, or one of your neighbors was sunning topless.

Don't know about where you live, but google maps of my property are at least five years out of date.

Paul - Ya I wish there were eye candy out next door, I'd look too. Besides, the neighbor beyond me isn't visible (you can't see the power lines he was adjacent to from their property either.

Anyway yes as mikewj says, Google maps picture is > 5 years out of date. Work we did within months of buying (now more than 5 years ago) isn't on current google maps / earth / or other mappings I can find. And you can't pick out belongings, doors/paths (its an acre) and other details etc - I'm sure there's a lot to see if you wanted - part of why I have tall trees along the property line - privacy and security.

Not counting the set up time, yuo had 8-9 minutes to simply walk out and ask " hows the view?"

Knowing that u know goes a long way.

My experience is that if someone is REALLY casing the joint, they won't say, "oh, we were hoping you weren't home. We're just looking over your property for anything worth stealing."

Saw a guy in Ohio doing that, he was looking for morel mushrooms.

This guy was probably just being safe so he didn't hit the top wires.

I watched a crew down on Paradise lower HPP on Tuesday. They stopped traffic, set up the truck and he went up and cut off about 2 feet from the ends of 3 or 4 palm fronds. They get paid by the hour too.

My neighbor had his licensed “medicinal” plants ripped off after a similar situation with tree cutters. He suspects they were the only ones who could see into his property. You are not the only person who thinks some tree cutters are up to no good. . Just saying, it’s possible they were scoping out your place.

Report it to the tree cutting company owner. They sometimes dont even talk to there operators for days, and assume the supervisor of the unit is doing the job right. I would have gone out and talked to them for sure. We had a red mini van go by slow 5 times in a row in hpp yesterday. Im sure they were looking for stuff to steal.allwasy get there liscense plate.
